By Randy Kennedy – NY Times

It’s not common for important philanthropic prizes to go to people whose work involves criminal trespass and who make statements like the following: “You never know who’s part of the police and who’s not.”

But the TED conference, the California lecture series named for its roots in technology, entertainment and design, said on Tuesday that it planned to give its annual $100,000 prize for 2011 — awarded in the past to figures like Bill Clinton, Bono and the biologist E. O. Wilson — to the Parisian street artist known as J R, a shadowy figure who has made a name for himself by plastering colossal photographs in downtrodden neighborhoods around the world. The images usually extol local residents, to whom he has become a Robin Hood-like hero. [Read More]

By Jen Doll – The Village Voice

?It’s the end of an era. The Hotel Chelsea, which opened in 1884 — where Sid Vicious may or may not have killed Nancy Spungen, Andy Warhol directed Chelsea Girls, and the names of residents frequently read like a who’s who of ’60s counterculture — is now up for sale, reports the Wall Street Journal.

The hotel’s 15 shareholders (led by three families whose Hungarian immigrant ancestors bought the West 23rd Street hotel 65 years ago) have decided to sell the 200,000 square foot building after determining that modernizing would be too challenging and run into the millions. A hotel spokesman told ABC News that the building’s upkeep “required a $2 million to $3 million investment in recent years to renovate 25 rooms and the lobby.” [Read More]

By Jessica Mahler – NY Press

It all began last Thursday, when residents heard that inspectors had visited the building at 573 Metropolitan Avenue in Williamsburg that houses “creative professional’s” workspace 3rd Ward, and had decreed tenants would no longer be allowed to spend nights there. This was confirmed Friday when a notice was posted by the Department of Buildings stating that people were only allowed inside the loft space from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.; anyone caught on the premises after-hours would be arrested and the building would be padlocked. A formal vacate order was put into effect on Monday, Oct. 18. At no point did the building’s management or landlord contact residents—around 40 or 50 in total—to mention or explain what was going on; all inquiring calls and emails made on Thursday and Friday to the management were ignored. Collecting records for production and his own listening pleasure ultimately evolved into an offer to co-host a hip-hop show on WDCE FM in Richmond, Virginia. Starting in 1996, he held this Friday rush-hour spot for over four years, gaining the respect of indy and major label artists around the country. His radio personality also provided the opportunity to have dozens of guest artists on the show when they passed through town.

Since relocating to New York City in 2002, production once again has been the Doctor’s main focus, but this hasn’t stopped him from playing to rowdy crowds all over Manhattan, Brooklyn and touring the rest ofthe US, Canada, and Europe. If you were fortunate enough to attend any of Doc’s resident DJ nights in NYC, there’s a good chance you might have heard him moving the masses playing everything from Soul ballads to House classics.

He still has the humble outlook that DJing is much like that of any fan of music. He remains open to what he likes or plays, and prefers to see DJing as an opportunity to share music with others. It’s not a performance – after all, it’s all other just other people’s music, redefined.

Doc Delay’s projects have been featured in various media including:
The Fader, The New Yorker, Vibe, Wire, WFMU’s Beware of the Blog, and
Perlich’s Picks in Toronto, among others.

    Sepalcure

With Love Pressure, the latest release on UK Dubstep giant Hotflush Recordings, Sepalcure is making the case for US producers of the predominantly British sound. Sepalcure’s combination of  love for bass and ’90s house acapellas is the culmination of a cathartic two week collaboration between Travis Stewart (Machinedrum) and Praveen Sharma (Praveen & Benoît). Their mix of tribal dub, house and two step beats works equally well for both late nights in the club and rainy, introspective nights at home. Detroit techno chords cut through wooden beats, neon synths and dubbed out atmospherics.

    o1o1 (halcyon | nyc)
o1o1 is scratching his head. He has no grand statements to make about himself as a dj and new producer of the drum n bass sound that he cultivates. It is sometimes soulful, at other times tech-y, maybe minimal, and then at times undefinable. There is no scene here. No names to drop. He spins this brand of music every Saturday and Sunday at halcyon the shop, “the greatest record store in the world”, according to him. In the end, it’s all about the music, and who is attracted to it organically… the way a scene is made before a trend can be attached to it. o1o1 meets his co-conspirators in this new sound every week at halcyon. He is building the scene here, grassroots style, one head at a time.

    mOma

DJ mOma has enjoyed a successful spell as NYC’s best kept DJ secret. The cat is officially out of the bag however and that particular spell is now over: mOma is now celebrated as one of the rotten apple’s most creative and sought-after spinmeisters. His versatile approach to reading diverse crowds and rocking dance floors has seen him grace turntables from the City’s highest profile clubs (Tenjune / Cain / Lotus) to downtown’s most exclusive spots (105 Riv / Gold Bar / The Box).

His seamless blend of funk soul hip hop reggae house and choice contemporary “bangers” also caught the ear of the entertainment industry as his services have been requested by Maxwell, Jill Scott and George Clooney; his weekly “Good Spot” residency – alongside Stimulus every Monday at 105 Riv – has been heralded as New York’s best party by nightlife industry types; his critically acclaimed “Satisfy My Soul” mixtape series has been described as the perfect mixtape collection by his DJ peers and casual listeners alike. mOma is also collaborating with The Rub’s heavyweight DJ Eleven on the Special Delivery project which consists of a monthly mixtape release accompanied by a monthly session at NYC’s premier musical mecca, APT.
