INTERVIEWS: ANTONIO OCASIO WEPA!
By Jose Luis Benavides (Gozamos)
Thanks for your time Antonio. If you don’t mind I’d like to start off by getting to know you. Where you from? How old are you? and what’s one of your first memories of music?
I’m Puerto Rican. Born in “El Barrio”, NYC and raised in the South Bronx.First memories of music were in my home and from neighbors and the community as a whole. There was always music playing in my home. My mother played records while she cooked, cleaned and even when we were just lounging. She mostly played traditional Puerto Rican music, Classic Salsa, Boleros (Daniel Santo, Los Angeles Negro, etc) and what I call ‘Jibaro’ music which is played by a guitar called a Cuatro (4 string guitar – I love the sound of it). In Puerto Rico, back in the day, they’d used these songs to tell stories of events that were happening in other villages. My brother used to also play all of the cool stuff like Osibisa, War, etc and some Rock including Santana when he first came out.

NEWS: 2011 ALBUM SALES ROSE FOR THE 1ST SINCE 2004
By Allen Starbury (ballerstatus.com)
2012 is finally here, so what happened with album sales in 2001? They actually rose for the first time since 2004, propelled by digital sales, cheaper album prices and special offers, as well as a booming vinyl market.
Nielsen released numbers on Wednesday (January 4), revealing that U.S. music sales rose 6.9% in 2011 with overall sales of albums, single tracks and music videos increased to 1.61 billion units.
Total album sales expanded 1.3 percent to 330.6 million.
Despite a rise in sales, physical CD sales fell 6% last year, but digital album downloads made up for it by a 20% increase to a record 103.1 million.
Digital song sales grew 8.5% in 2011 to a record 1.27 billion downloads, compared with 1.17 billion in 2010.
Another area that boomed was vinyl sales — album sales soared to 3.9 million copies, versus 2.8 million in 2010.
2011’s top-selling album was Adele’s 21, raking in over 5.8 million sales. But, Lil Wayne made his mark at #4 with 1.9 million, with Jay-Z and Kanye West’s Watch The Throne coming in five slots later at #9 with just over 1.2 million sold.
However, The Throne did out-sell Weezy’s Carter IV digitally, landing at #4 on the list behind Adele and Lady Gaga with 608,000 digital album sales.
Check out some of the numbers below, tracked by Nielsen.

EVENTS: CROSSROADS -LOU GORBEA-
Anyone who knows Louie “Lou” Gorbea probably knows his roots are in dance (danced with Alvin Ailey and American Ballet Theatre). Those who love his work will probably agree that his excellence as a DJ and producer spring from his dancer’s intuitive understanding of how music moves people, both body and spirit. Lou’s focus on audience response makes each of his sets unique and infuses his production work with an essence that can simply cannot be faked.
There are very few DJs that capture the imagination so thoroughly and this man is certainly one of those few. There are few who can cross genres fearlessly, Lou is most certainly one of them.
This veteran DJ brings the soulful heat with a touch of Latin flavor, and a deep knowledge of music across genres and eras, incorporating diverse sounds, classic rock, disco & R&B through Latin and House styles. He is famous for spinning electrifying old school sets and burning up the dance floor with a blend of the classic and the new.
Join us and let’s dance together!!
