Coney Island Reggae Beach Party: 2011 Season Sunday, July 17, and Sunday, August 14
From 2 p.m. to sundown, FREE Coney Island Boardwalk at West 19th Street
WKCR’s Eastern Standard Time and the Sound Liberation Front have joined forces again to present the 2011 season of the Coney Island Reggae Beach Party series, bringing the enormously influential culture of Jamaican sound systems back to the Coney Island Boardwalk on Sunday, July 17, and Sunday, August 14.
Building on the success of last year’s inaugural season, the free events will begin at 2 p.m. and last until sunset, and will feature live DJs, special guest artists, and fun activities for the whole family. This year the parties will take place at a new location directly on the beach at W. 19th Street (near the iconic red tower).
Each event will feature an all-star lineup of music selectors and guest vocalists curated by WKCR host Carter Van Pelt. Some notable talents who performed at last year’s events include dancehall legends Johnny Osbourne, Carlton Livingston, and Mikey Jarrett; seminal NYC sound system Sir Tommy’s; and, legendary record producer Clive Chin.

EASTERN STANDARD TIME (EST) is a Jamaican music program on WKCR (89.9 FM New York) that airs live every Saturday from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. The program, previously known as “Reggae Riddims,” has been on the air for more than 20 years and has an international following.
SOUND LIBERATION FRONT is a Brooklyn-based organization devoted to utilizing the power of music as a socially liberating and unifying cultural force. In 2009, the group organized the Sound Liberation Festival in Brooklyn. Since then, it has been active in promoting cross-cultural music to the community through innovative events and programs.

DIGITAL MUSIC BOOST RECORD SALES
Today’s Live Braodcast
Funkyslice 9pm~11pm – DJ Monchan @ Cedar Party Room
By BEN SISARIO – NY Times
What’s the biggest surprise in the music industry this year? Music sales are actually up for the first time since 2004.
According to Nielsen SoundScan’s midyear sales report, which was released on Wednesday, 155.5 million albums were sold in the United States in the first six months of 2011, up 1 percent from the 153.9 million albums sold at the same time last year. When sales are measured by “track equivalent albums,” which factors in single-track downloads — the rule of thumb is 10 songs to an album — the number is 221.5 million, up 3.6 percent. These increases may be small, but the edge has been sustained for the last six weeks, and in a business that has been battered as badly and for so long as the music industry has, any good news is very good news.
