  • SESSION 840 : BLESS UP 02.24.11

Mixed by Liondub, David Last, Nukka Jones & Praveen

    David Last (Konque/theAgriculture)

David Last is a musician and visual artist living in Brooklyn NY. With Sasha Kaline(Alka_Rex), he is a founder of the Konque label & music project. Tracks range from electronic dance music to cinematic orchestral ambience depending on the setting. This is not surprising, as he’s been creating music for a variety of venues; the dancefloor, Imax film, video installation, children’s animation, and albums.  He currently releases in a variety of contexts with labels like Staubgold (Berlin), Konque (NYC), and Foundsound/Unfoundsound (Berlin). He has remixed for many others including Francois K’s WaveTec (NYC), indie psych-rock label The Social Registry (NYC) and Audio.NL (Rotterdam). His downtempo full-length dubut album the Push Pul is now in its second printing with The Agriculture (NYC), having gained respect from tough critics like Pitchforkmedia, and generating a sizable international cult following.

Praveen Sharma (Casette / Percussion Lab | NYC)

Praveen Sharma has been making music for most of his life, and has contributed releases to AI, Neo Ouija, and Expanding Records. He also runs Percussion Lab, a hub for underground electronic music and exclusive DJ sets, in addition to being an avid live performer and event organizer in New York City. Praveen released his debut Backed by Spirits on the now-defunct Neo Ouija imprint in early 2005. Not long after, Praveen returned from a profound journey through his family’s native India with a minidisk full of field recordings and voices, forming the basis of Song Spun Simla, his second album released with Benoit Pioulard. His most recent work with Machinedrum under the alias Sepalcure has garnered international acclaim and a solid string of releases thru the infamous Hotflush label headed by Scuba. Their mix of Tribal Dub, House and Two-Step beats works equally well for both late nights in the club and rainy, introspective nights at home. Detroit Techno chords cut through wooden beats, neon synths and dubbed out atmospherics, leading the always looking for the next thing music press to coin the term “Love Step” to describe Sepalcure’s effect.

Mixed by Crazy Larry & Taimur Agha

    Crazy Larry

Crazy Larry is a young and fearless talent with an insatiable craving for old and new sounds. He fell in love with dance music in 2000, being inspired in his love of wax by Denver’s famed record store Casa Del Sol, where he would eventually be employed. Transplanted to NYC two years ago, Larry brought with him a well deserved rep based on his infamous underground parties, Udder Madness and, in cahoots with Taimur & Co., Cheap Sunglasses. He also brought a fierce yet fun live set that incorporates vintage drum machines, live home made plug-ins, and even the Nintendo Wii. Missing his record slinging days though, Larry recently joined Taimur Agha and Shadi Magallaa on team halcyon. In 2011 look out for Time to Get ILL, the label born from his shindgs of the same name.

    The Bandwagon

The Bandwagon is halcyon’s All New Old-Timey Record Review and Talent Show! Each and every Two hour ride on The Bandwagon begins with halcyon the shoppe’s own high-flying Techno honcho in a poncho… the mysterious and often delirious Taimur Agha of BLK|Market Membership! Then, turn your attention to the center ring for The Bandwagon’s main attraction!… Direct from the far off nether regions of Brooklyn we bring you an astonishing cavalcade of talent never before assembled on one program – musical magicians, masterful minstrels and mystifying midi-freaks alike will be unveiled to your shock and awe with in-depth interviews and exclusive featured performances.

  • SESSION 833 : BLESS UP 02.17.11

    FaltyDL (Planet Mu/Rush Hour/Ramp | NYC)
FaltyDL is Drew Lustman outta New York City. He’s making garage ‘n stuff with his hands. Nostalgic tracks immersed in the old New York and Chicago sound yet creating a more subtle futuristic Big Apple version mashing together influences from Hip-Hop, Dubstep, Garage, Soul, Jungle and Electronica creating his own NYG. NYG. NYG.

    Dev79 (Seclusiasis/Slit Jockey | Philly)
Philadelphia’s brazen Dev79, aka Gair Marking, has been bangin’ out the underground sounds for years. With an almost reckless abandon he attacks a barrage of genres (from UKG to Grime to Tropical to Dubstep to Rap and whatever else) to create his spin on the Street Bass style. He’s done recent remixes for +Verb, Guttstar, Kaiser, Raffertie, DZ, Starkey, BD1982, Gobs the Zombie, Mestizo, Dmn Days, Sduk and is soon to present a mixtape for up and coming r&b/reggae singer Sheba as well as working on a collab EP with Seattle’s Thrills (Sub Philo Music). Mixed by Ali Coleman & Nutritious @ Vinylmnia Popup Records in Zakka

    Who said Vinylmania is dead?

    “VINYLMANIA STILL ALIVE”

Owner Charlie Grappone opened the Vinylmania’s doors in 1978. He opened the store with a sparse selection of Rock records, but after crowds from the Paradise Garage started showing up, he realized his market was with the house heads. Vinylmania quickly became the goto spot for house in NYC, eventually spawning a record label under the same name, and it’s legacy began. Sadly Vinylmania closed its doors in 2007 after almost 3 decades of business. Charlie has since moved his inventory into Downtown 161, a record distributor in Lower Manhattan, where he opens one day a week for a select group of shoppers.

DailySession and Charlie Grappone are going to revive the life and legacy of New York’s premiere House record store — Vinylmania. The doors may have closed in 2007, but Charlie’s love for records still lives on. DailySession will open the Vinylmania pop-up shop in Zakka. So all you people who thought the record store ended when the lights went out, come into Zakka to feel the beat again.

  • SESSION 809: BLESS UP 01.27.11

    Mixed By Praveen Sharma,Liondub,Udachi&Brandwan

    “Bless Up!”
On the fifth day he created bass, then he took an Amen break. And so it was, that on Thursdays the high priests of low frequency would gather at the record store in Brooklyn to perform the ancient rites of the turntable… It is in this solemn spirit of praise to all that rumbles the jungle that the cult we call halcyon presents our latest, soon to be habitual ritual, Bless Up! – Thursdays from 6-9pm at halcyon the shop and broadcast live on dailysession.com. Funky monks take note, Bless Up! is three hours of anything-but-silent devotion to the woofer ripping trinity of Drum and Bass, Dubstep and Dub Reggae. Our own pied pontiff, Liondub administers the wax sacraments alongside a rotating cast of cardinals representing NYC’s holiest DJ diocese. Visiting saints make miraculous appearances and as always, there’s no tithe at the door and plenty of alms for the poor, so you can save while being saved.
Bless Up with us on Facebook!

  • SESSION 808: FUNKY SLICE 02.14.11

Mixed by DJ Neil Nice (Turntable Lab)

  • SESSION 807: SLOW DISCO SATURDAYS 12.04.10

Mixed by Matthew Kyle, Soho808 & Crystamafia

    Matthew Kyle

Matthew Kyle (M.K.) loves whiskey, cats and disco – just our kind of guy. The New York-based DJ turned producer only started dabbling in music-making eight months ago and he’s already all the buzz with two hot releases on Berlin’s vinyl-only disco edit imprint, Dikso under his former monikers NoRequests and byDesign. Although still a ripe talent, Kyle has already carved out a trademark style that straddles between head-bobbing boogie, nusoul and downbeat disco. The Dikso star gets crafty with his edits and reworks by splicing up and pitching down old gems and classics by Al Green, the Bee Gees, Chaka Khan, Biggie and more timeless artits, sometimes even overlapping their tunes into one midtempo groover. Come early to hear M.K. warm up the afternoon with some super slow disco soul…

    Soho808

Soho808 is Nathaniel Jay and Dave Robertson, two friends who met randomly at a dirty afterhours boat party and realized they shared an affinity for house music that runs high on quality and low on the BPM. They quickly took to Robertson’s Soho studio to begin making music of their own, turning out deep, slow tracks such as their first release “From New York with Love” (out now on Stupendous Music), their own remix of Soul II Soul’s 90s classic, “Back to Life”, with more tracks and other projects in the pipeline. Both DJs on their own in the past; their DJ sets together reflect the music they make; pitched down party music with soul.
