  • NEWS: NIGHTCLUBBING

By Tom Kalin, filmmaker (Swoon, Third Known Nest, Savage Grace) – Inside/Out MoMA

I never visited the Warehouse, the Chicago club where legendary Frankie Knuckles was DJ (and where the moniker “House Music” was born), but I was lucky enough to dance all night at the Power Plant, the club he opened there in the early 1980s. Later, during a visit to NYC in the summer of 1983 (before I moved here in 1987), my friends took me out for a delirious pilgrimage to hear the mighty sounds of Larry Levan at Paradise Garage. This former garage at 84 King Street was a place of few words. Dance was the message. Waitresses, postal clerks, trannies, and bankers all moved with an eloquence absent from ordinary life and transformed that dance floor into a music-fueled perpetual state of grace. [Read More]

  • EVENTS: LOOKING AT MUSIC 3.0

    By MoMA P.S 1

Looking at Music 3.0, the third in a series of exhibitions exploring the influence of music on contemporary art practices, focuses on New York in the 1980s and 1990s. In this dynamic period, imaginative forms of street art spread across the five boroughs, articulating the counter-culture tenor of the times. As the city transitioned from bankruptcy to solvency, graffiti, media, and performance artists took advantage of low rents and collaborated on ad hoc works shown in alternative spaces and underground clubs. Appropriation, also known as remixing, thrived. Approximately 70 works from a wide range of artists and musicians will be on view, including works by the Beastie Boys, Kathleen Hanna and Le Tigre, Keith Haring, Christian Marclay, Steven Parrino, Run DMC, and Joanie 4 Jackie, a video chain letter founded by Miranda July. • NEWS: R.I.P. LOLEATTA HOLLOWAY

    By JON PARELESNY Times

Loleatta Holloway, a gospel-charged disco singer whose 1980 hit“Love Sensation” had a long afterlife when fragments of it were used in later hits, died Monday in a suburban Chicago hospital. She was 64 and lived in Chicago.

She died after slipping into a coma after a brief illness, her manager, Ron Richardson, said in a statement.

Ms. Holloway was born in 1946 and grew up singing in gospel groups, including her mother’s Holloway Community Singers choir. From 1967 to 1971 she sang in one of gospel’s most respected groups, the Caravans, led by Albertina Walker. She then turned to secular music, bringing the raspy fervor and airborne whoops of her gospel performances to songs about desire. [Read More]

  • SESSION 840 : BLESS UP 02.24.11

Mixed by Liondub, David Last, Nukka Jones & Praveen

    David Last (Konque/theAgriculture)

David Last is a musician and visual artist living in Brooklyn NY. With Sasha Kaline(Alka_Rex), he is a founder of the Konque label & music project. Tracks range from electronic dance music to cinematic orchestral ambience depending on the setting. This is not surprising, as he’s been creating music for a variety of venues; the dancefloor, Imax film, video installation, children’s animation, and albums.  He currently releases in a variety of contexts with labels like Staubgold (Berlin), Konque (NYC), and Foundsound/Unfoundsound (Berlin). He has remixed for many others including Francois K’s WaveTec (NYC), indie psych-rock label The Social Registry (NYC) and Audio.NL (Rotterdam). His downtempo full-length dubut album the Push Pul is now in its second printing with The Agriculture (NYC), having gained respect from tough critics like Pitchforkmedia, and generating a sizable international cult following.

Praveen Sharma (Casette / Percussion Lab | NYC)

Praveen Sharma has been making music for most of his life, and has contributed releases to AI, Neo Ouija, and Expanding Records. He also runs Percussion Lab, a hub for underground electronic music and exclusive DJ sets, in addition to being an avid live performer and event organizer in New York City. Praveen released his debut Backed by Spirits on the now-defunct Neo Ouija imprint in early 2005. Not long after, Praveen returned from a profound journey through his family’s native India with a minidisk full of field recordings and voices, forming the basis of Song Spun Simla, his second album released with Benoit Pioulard. His most recent work with Machinedrum under the alias Sepalcure has garnered international acclaim and a solid string of releases thru the infamous Hotflush label headed by Scuba. Their mix of Tribal Dub, House and Two-Step beats works equally well for both late nights in the club and rainy, introspective nights at home. Detroit Techno chords cut through wooden beats, neon synths and dubbed out atmospherics, leading the always looking for the next thing music press to coin the term “Love Step” to describe Sepalcure’s effect.

Mixed by Crazy Larry & Taimur Agha

    Crazy Larry

Crazy Larry is a young and fearless talent with an insatiable craving for old and new sounds. He fell in love with dance music in 2000, being inspired in his love of wax by Denver’s famed record store Casa Del Sol, where he would eventually be employed. Transplanted to NYC two years ago, Larry brought with him a well deserved rep based on his infamous underground parties, Udder Madness and, in cahoots with Taimur & Co., Cheap Sunglasses. He also brought a fierce yet fun live set that incorporates vintage drum machines, live home made plug-ins, and even the Nintendo Wii. Missing his record slinging days though, Larry recently joined Taimur Agha and Shadi Magallaa on team halcyon. In 2011 look out for Time to Get ILL, the label born from his shindgs of the same name.

Mixed by Liondub, Nihal, FaltyDL & Dev79

    FaltyDL (Planet Mu/Rush Hour/Ramp | NYC)
FaltyDL is Drew Lustman outta New York City. He’s making garage ‘n stuff with his hands. Nostalgic tracks immersed in the old New York and Chicago sound yet creating a more subtle futuristic Big Apple version mashing together influences from Hip-Hop, Dubstep, Garage, Soul, Jungle and Electronica creating his own NYG. NYG. NYG.

    Dev79 (Seclusiasis/Slit Jockey | Philly)
Philadelphia’s brazen Dev79, aka Gair Marking, has been bangin’ out the underground sounds for years. With an almost reckless abandon he attacks a barrage of genres (from UKG to Grime to Tropical to Dubstep to Rap and whatever else) to create his spin on the Street Bass style. He’s done recent remixes for +Verb, Guttstar, Kaiser, Raffertie, DZ, Starkey, BD1982, Gobs the Zombie, Mestizo, Dmn Days, Sduk and is soon to present a mixtape for up and coming r&b/reggae singer Sheba as well as working on a collab EP with Seattle’s Thrills (Sub Philo Music). Dev79 and Starkey are the masterminds behind the Seclusiasis empire and Street Bass Anthems series, as well as the Slit Jockey Records imprint with additional partner El Carnicero.

    Who said Vinylmania is dead?

    “VINYLMANIA STILL ALIVE”

Owner Charlie Grappone opened the Vinylmania’s doors in 1978. He opened the store with a sparse selection of Rock records, but after crowds from the Paradise Garage started showing up, he realized his market was with the house heads. Vinylmania quickly became the goto spot for house in NYC, eventually spawning a record label under the same name, and it’s legacy began. Sadly Vinylmania closed its doors in 2007 after almost 3 decades of business. Charlie has since moved his inventory into Downtown 161, a record distributor in Lower Manhattan, where he opens one day a week for a select group of shoppers.

DailySession and Charlie Grappone are going to revive the life and legacy of New York’s premiere House record store — Vinylmania. The doors may have closed in 2007, but Charlie’s love for records still lives on. DailySession will open the Vinylmania pop-up shop in Zakka. So all you people who thought the record store ended when the lights went out, come into Zakka to feel the beat again.
