Beats & BBQ to Celebrate its Fourth Year of Soulful Dance Music, BBQ and You !
On Monday, May 30, 2011 from 3-10 pm at LP& Harmony (683 Grand Street), Beats & BBQ will kick off its fourth season providing the Williamsburg, Brooklyn community its successful combination of “Soulful Dance Music, BBQ and You”. With each beverage purchase, patrons are entitled to a plate of free bbq, expertly grilled by Dustin Smallheer of Daddy’s Little Grill. Music is provided by DJs Jose G (Pre Party Radio), Ali Coleman (Voice of Voices NYC), Siren (Save the Robots), Kyle McNeil (Art for Progress / WBAI 99.5 FM), Dawn Anesta (Soul Fire), Ruby Red(Velvet Factory Productions), and Go Kiryu (Lion One Music).
Since 2007, Beats & BBQ has been a grassroots event that takes place on the holidays of the summer season (Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day). It is a co-production by Deepdance Promotions and LP & Harmony bar. We produce this event to promote community and togetherness through good food, good dance music, and good cheer from our patrons. A simply killer 45 from the bay area’s finest funk band, Monophonics. “Like Yesterday” is a monster A-side, which was recorded at the legendary Killion Studios in LA. While the B-Side, “Freedom” by Destruments is a beautifully soulful instrumental track.

Over the past five years, Monophonics have staked their claim as the San Francisco Bay Area’s premier funk/soul band. Raised amid the city’s rich musical culture, these young musicians proudly carry on the tradition of music native to their hometown.
Monophonics were formed in 2005; originally an instrumental ensemble comprised of guitarist Ian McDonald, bassist Myles O’Mahony, saxophonist Alex Baky, trumpeter Ryan Scott, and drummer Austin Bohlman, the band has recently added the dynamic soul vocals of keyboardist Kelly Finnigan. The result is psychedelic soul & heavy duty funk, which harks back to the stylings of the late 60’s and early 70’s, all while keeping its feet planted in the present.
As a mainstay of San Francisco venues such as the Boom Boom Room and the Independent, the Monophonics have created a national buzz and fervent local following, sharing the stage & bill with such names as Soulive, Macy Gray, Budos Band, George Porter, Archie Bell, Blues Traveler, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Dumpstafunk, Idris Muhammad and many more. Their recording credits include tracks with the The New Mastersounds and Karl Denson (Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, Grey Boy All-Stars) who’s also featured on their latest release and second album, Into the Infrasounds. The album also includes musical guests Mic Gillete of Tower of Power & Jonathan Korty of Vinyl. Their touring schedule has brought their signature rowdy, hard-hitting live set to over 400 dates from California to Mississippi, as well as major music festivals including High Sierra, Joshua Tree and Las Tortugas. Additionally, the ensemble has established itself as yearly residents at the legendary New Orleans Jazz Festival. They have been featured in various magazines including Relix’s “On the Rise” section, and in 2007, were awarded best Funk/Soul/R&B band in SF Weekly’s “Best of the Bay Awards.”
In early 2011, the group will showcase their new sound with the release of a 7” entitled “Like Yesterday,” for Colemine Records. The record will feature members of the Los Angeles based funk group Orgone, and will be distributed across the United States, Europe and Japan. Also in 2011, Monophonics will complete their third album to date, lacing the sounds of early 70’s and late 60’s soul with fuzzy guitars, freaky synthesizers, hard- driving horns and gritty vocals, a sonic testimony to the evolution of this six-piece unit.

JKriv (Jason Kriveloff) is a man of many musical hats. As a founding member, bass-player, and co-songwriter/producer for the live-house band Tortured Soul, he has toured the world and contributed to staples of the 2000-something deep house oevre. Lately he’s been collecting his forays into the world of DJing and production under the moniker DEEP&DISCO, which aptly describes the sound and style that informs his musical approach. Having amassed a sizeable following of discophiles around the globe through his signature-crafted Disco edits (yes, those!), 2011 will see the launch of Deep&Disco Recordings, a home for both his original productions and contributions from Lou Teti, Blacklodge, Sleazy McQueen, Space Ranger and more. Additionally, J is a lover of small animals, fountain cokes, and long walks through rat-infested, trash-covered Brooklyn streets.

If creative synergy can be traced to a specific time and place, New York during the turn of the ’80s would be the influential epicenter for producer/DJ Henry Maldonado aka Son of Sound. Born into a social and economically turbulent, Disco crazed New York City in July of ’71, Henry’s early musical influence would come in the form of house parties. His father, Enrique Maldonado, a Latin percussionist with an eclectic record collection was the maestro in charge of programming a steady diet of Disco, Soul and of course Latin.Henry’s prominent experiences would derive from the Post-Disco/pre-Hip-Hop, generation-X epoch of the early ’80s. Hip-Hop had spread beyond the Bronx and into the remaining boroughs. Disco was fighting for its survival, fusing with Punk Rock, Salsa, Electro and Rap. Electro pioneers such as Kraftwerk, Man Parrish and Arthur Baker laid the template for electronic dance music. Radio mix-show DJ’s such as John “Jelly Bean” Benitez, Red Alert, Latin Rascals and Tony Humphries would serve as Henry’s mentors in the art of the mix.

Francesco Leali and Federico Maccherone aka Clockwork met at the age of 15 both growing up in the suburbs of Milan. Francesco’s music interests and qualifications range from twelve years studying percussion at the Milanese conservatory, to a degree in music marketing and artist promotion. Federico on the other hand started as a label founder, later deciding to follow his true passion moving to New York to start playing in underground clubs immediately making a name for himself. Their music is driven by anything varying from ’80s Disco music to chugging Techno. Their sound is mainly characterized by bouncy and decisive analog bass lines combined to rhythmic drum patterns, all mainly inspired by music from the ’60s ’70s and ’80s.
