SESSION 410 : BLESSUP : 10.29.09
Liondub welcomes the Percussion Lab family to the fold once again for their monthly residency at Halcyon the shop’s Blessup instore session. This week features Guardian, an underground dj with an impressive and wide ranging selection of banging tunes as well the founder of percussionlab.com, Praveen Sharma, who brings the deepest sounds of dubstep, uk garage, and lovestep. Liondub jumps in and drops an impromptu UK Funky and dubstep set to top it all off. Fire.
About Bless Up: On the fifth day he created bass, then he took an Amen break. And so it was, that on Thursdays the high priests of low frequency would gather at the record store in Brooklyn to perform the ancient rites of the turntable… It is in this solemn spirit of praise to all that rumbles the jungle that the cult we call halcyon presents our latest, soon to be habitual ritual, Bless Up! – Thursdays from 6-9pm at halcyon the shop and archived on dailysession.com and halcyonline.com. Funky monks take note, Bless Up! is three hours of anything-but-silent devotion to the woofer ripping trinity of Drum and Bass, Dubstep and Dub Reggae. Our own pied pontiff, Liondub administers the wax sacraments alongside a rotating cast of cardinals representing NYC’s holiest DJ diocese. Visiting saints make miraculous appearances and as always, there’s no tithe at the door and plenty of alms for the poor, so you can save while being saved.

NEWS: LIMELIGHT REBORN AS MALL
By C.J. Hughes – NY Times
What is perhaps Manhattan’s best-known former house of worship will be reborn this spring as the Limelight Marketplace, with 35 upscale boutiques and restaurants within its lancet-windowed walls on Avenue of the Americas in Chelsea.
The marketplace, in the landmark 19th-century church that once housed the Limelight nightclub, will combine elements of holiday gift bazaars and department stores. Vendors will set up side by side in the 12,000-square-foot complex, some in tiny berths of 100 square feet, and shoppers can pay for their purchases at central checkout counters. It is the first foray into permanent retail spaces for a number of tenants, but available one-year leases will minimize the risk somewhat. [Read More]

NEWS: INTEGRITY OF ALBUMS
By Dave Itzkoff – NY Times
Finally: score one for the wealthy rock stars. A British court ruled in favor of Pink Floyd on Thursday, saying that EMI, its longtime record label, could no no longer sell songs from its concept albums as individual singles on the Internet, Reuters reported.
On Tuesday, a lawyer for Pink Floyd argued in a High Court hearing in London that the band’s contract “expressly prohibited” the “unbundling” of its songs in any configuration other than the way they were originally produced and released. (And really, who wants to hear “The Happiest Days of Our Lives” if it isn’t immediately followed by “Another Brick in the Wall: Part 2??) Though EMI had said this did not apply to online sales, Pink Floyd’s lawyer said the argument “makes no commercial sense.” [Read More]

SLF presents Afro-Dub Sessions
Saturday, Mar. 27, 2010, 10 p.m.–4 a.m.
(and every last Saturday of the month)
Rose Live Music, 345 Grand St., Brooklyn, NYSound Liberation Front (SLF), an arts and music organization based in Brooklyn, presents Afro-Dub Sessions: a monthly party at Rose Live Music in Williamsburg that combines live music and DJs to celebrate the best in Dub and African-influenced sounds.
This month’s party will feature DJ DRM, co-founder and label manager of one of New York’s longest-running boutique record labels, Brooklyn’s Bastard Jazz Recordings. His Dubwise Sessions parties at Studio BPM were renowned for bringing live old-school reggae acts such as Cedric IM Brooks, Milton Henry and Sister Nancy together with top-notch DJs to a uniquely underground, bunker-like setting near the Brooklyn waterfront. On the decks, DJ DRM is known for his eclectic sets culled from the tide pools of Dub, Reggae, Hip-Hop, B-Boy Breaks, Latin, Disco, House, Afrobeat and more.
As it does every month, Afro-Dub Sessions also will feature a pair of live performances by resident band Super Hi-Fi, which has been packing the house with their creative melding of Afrobeat, Dub, live remixing and special guest appearances. The five-piece collective features members of Aphrodesia, Slavic Soul Party, The Superpowers, and the Blue Man Group.
Acclaimed Ska and Dub musician/producer Victor Rice (Moon Records/Strikkly Vikkly DubSystem) will also be on hand adding live dub effects to Super Hi-Fi’s sets. SLF’s resident DJs Linh, Q-Mastah and Lil Tiger will bring their diverse musical selections to the turntables to round out the night.Afro-Dub Sessions is dedicated to the idea that dub, born in Jamaica, and African musical styles like Afrobeat, Afropop and Afrofunk are natural partners in the origins of global dance music. Each month SLF aims to explore these connections by hosting a different guest DJ specializing in Dub or African-influenced styles. The April 24 party will feature Awesome Tapes from Africa’s Brian Shimkovitz.
SOUND LIBERATION FRONT is a Brooklyn-based non-profit organization devoted to the power of music as a socially liberating and unifying cultural force. Last summer, the group organized the Sound Liberation Festival in Brooklyn. The event featured hip-hop legends Brand Nubian; electro-Afrobeat pioneers Chico Mann; Ticklah; DJs Kenny Parker, Cosmo Baker, and Ian Friday; and, workshops by Afro Mosaic Soul and DubSpot. SLF also hosts SoundLib Wednesdays at Moe’s Bar in Fort Greene.
