  • NEWS: GOVS ISL. ENTRTNMNT PROPSLS

    By Jacques Steinberg – NYTimes

“The Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation on Monday will invite proposals for an entertainment and dining operation and for art studios and exhibition space on the island, just off the tip of Manhattan. The entertainment and dining element is to be in a temporary structure like a large tent, the corporation said, in a parking lot near the Governors Island ferry landing. The performance space is expected to seat 500 to 800. The artists’ studio and exhibition program will be placed in Building 110, an 1870 structure near the ferry landing. The program will not allow any residential use. The proposals would cover five years, starting in 2009, though renewals are possible. Leslie Koch, president of the corporation, said these submissions, called requests for proposals, reflect a focus on the arts, ‘the role the island can play in the culture of New York City.'” [NYTimes]

  • NEWS: BANKSY IDENTIFIED?

    By Julie Bloom – NYTimes

“The Mail on Sunday, the British newspaper, says that it has discovered the identity of Banksy, the mysterious graffiti artist, the BBC reported. A 34-year-old named Robin Gunningham has been identified as Banksy, based on a photograph taken in 2004 showing a man next to a spray can in Jamaica. The newspaper said that it had found former acquaintances who identified the man in the picture as Mr. Gunningham. The photograph first appeared online and then in The Evening Standard in 2004. A New Yorker article in 2007 also investigated the legitimacy of the image, which was taken by a Peter Dean Rickards, a Jamaican photographer. An antigraffiti officer in Bristol, England, where Banksy is speculated to be from, said he believed the photograph to be authentic as well. But a spokeswoman for Banksy refused to comment on the report. “I’ll say what I always say,” she told the BBC. ‘I never confirm or deny these stories.'” [NYTimes]

  • NEWS: BOHEMIA TAKES FINAL BOWS

    By Campbell Robertson – NYTimes

“Now, 12 years later, it would be impossible to see the show and think it was set any time in the past decade. Much of “Rent” has become downright nostalgic, almost jarringly so. Several numbers revolve around pay phones and answering machines (20-somethings with answering machines!). Roger, the gloomy, HIV-positive guitarist with a nasty case of rocker’s block, plays gigs at CBGB, then a landmark of the New York underground music scene, now a menswear boutique. A group of lefty hipsters talk politics with no mention of anyone named Cheney or even the first Bush.” [Read More]

  • DJ Stewart @ 205

Stewart from A1 will be holding it down at A1 on Saturday. Check out his mixes in the A1 Archives!

    Here’s the party info:

Absent for the party but providing the magic pass word is Jeremie. The magic word for the comp list is “GUM JOB”. Ok I admit it does not roll of the lips (no pun intended) as easily as the past ones but hey it will get you in for sure. In lieu of the door charge spend the extra bucks at the bar in the basement. For my lush friends I’ll have some drink tickets to booster your buzz.

Say the pass word again and practice it slowly at home….”GUM JOB”

205 CLUB IS LOCATED AT 205 CHRISTIE STREET AT STANTON STREET.

    DJ’s are Angels:

Experience nine hours of massive sound, elevating the dance floor long past sunrise with elegant techno, deep house and hip-hop beats by DJ’s Kimyon, MSG, Lauren Flax, Reaganomics and resident Zemi 17.

    Live music is Godly:

Mia Theodoratus – An angelic Harpist with and Adam Dugas on vocals and Dee Pop, of Bush Tetras fame on Drums/ percussion. This darkly elegant, psychedelic and sophisticated duo dramatically interpret a wide range of songs with heavenly purity.

Dig Cholewka’s wise and smoky vocals and Marsh’s synth and bass lines grooving wickedly to Garwacke’s bright and bouncy drumming. Meanwhile Smith laces the stuff with effects-heavy, spaced-out trombone gold.

Gato Loco – Screams it’s way through latin jazz while incorporating free-improv, delicate textures, and dense compositions.

    The Harem is for Hedonists:

Goodman Industries is building a new harem lounge with soft fabrics, cush corners, hookahs and chilled Absinthe.

  • NEWS: NY’S STREET BALL DJ’S

    By Corey Kilgannon – NYTimes

“The flashy version of playground basketball known as street ball draws big crowds and values dunks, fakes and clever nicknames more than assists, blocks and steals. Its popularity has grown so that there are highlight videotapes, sponsored team tours and television coverage. Teams have been sponsored by hip-hop artists including Fat Joe and P. Diddy. New York’s leagues include the Entertainer’s Basketball Classic in Rucker Park in Harlem, and the West Fourth Street Basketball League in Greenwich Village. In many of these leagues, the D.J.s seem as integral to the game as the players.” [Read More]

  • NEWS: WETLANDS TO OPEN IN BK

    From Gowanus Lounge:

“There was talk of Brooklyn Bowl coming — the 20,000-square-foot music venue and bowling alley owned by Peter Shapiro (right) and Charley Ryan (left), former owner and general manager, respectively, of the legendary music club Wetlands. But who knew it would be so close to Gutter? Set to open “before the end of the year, hopefully by the fall” says Shapiro, it will be at 61 Wythe Ave. in Williamsburg, behind Brooklyn Brewery, and two blocks from The Gutter, in an 1880s ironworks foundry.” [Read More]
