  • NEWS: WNYC EXPANDS

    042409_nytimes

    By Elizabeth Jensen – NYTimes

“On Tuesday WNYC radio’s Jerome L. Greene Performance Space will open its doors on Charlton and Varick Streets in Lower Manhattan, with ambitions to be more than just another of the electronic-news-ticker-wrapped, street-level broadcast studios that have popped up across the city since NBC’s “Today” show pioneered the trend. Passers-by will be able to peer in on public radio in the making; talk shows hosted by Brian Lehrer and Leonard Lopate, as well as the programs “Evening Music” and “Soundcheck,” will begin monthly broadcasts before audiences there. But the space, envisioned as a laboratory in which to rethink public radio as an interactive medium, will also host concerts, audio theater and political debates, many streamed live on thegreenespace.org.” [Read More]

  • NEWS: SMALLS JAZZ CLUB 15YEARS

    news_smalls

    By Ernest Barteldes-NewYork Press

In the spring of 1994, a jazz aficionado named Mitch Borden started the West Village–based Smalls Jazz Club, an after-hours basement where musicians and fans came together to celebrate the music they loved. Back then, things were quite different:There was a $10 cover charge and a loose BYOB policy. The music went on pretty much until the sun came up—a laidback scene quite different from other mainstream jazz venues in Manhattan. For starters, patrons not only brought six-packs from the neighborhood deli but also brought pizza, Chinese food or whatever munchies they could get.

But that was then. These days Smalls has a full bar and heftier cover charge, but the spirit remains. [Read More]
