• SESSION 674: EVENT SESSION 11.11.10

Mixed by Carter Van Pelt &  Hahn Solo

  • SESSION 673: GUEST SESSION 11.12.10

    Mixed by Timo Maas

    01. Okain – Scream (Nina Kraviz Remix)
    02. Homework – The rules of hip
    03. Tribal Trumpet – Santos Edit
    04. Johnny D. – Trivia Mango
    05. Alex D`Elia – Didascalia (Maetrik Remix)
    06. Timo Maas – Kick1Kick3
    07. Mutant Roma – Rebel
    08. Santos – Sinus Disco

German club veteran Timo Maas is a master of reinvention. Emerging during the excess of trance’s heyday in the late ‘90s with his self-labelled “Wet & Hard” style that fused techno, progressive house and funk in a rivetingly futuristic manner, he quickly became the remixer du jour for both the club underground and the commercial big leagues. Paul Oakenfold signed up his debut album Loud for his Perfecto imprint – a modern classic that effortlessly bridged accessibility and raw dancefloor sleaze from electro to breaks to tech and hip-hop – with his second album Pictures sharing a label with the likes of Muse and Garbage. And let’s not forget that “Dooms Night” remix of Azzido Da Bass which went on to inspire a generation of LFO-loving dubstep and bass producers. After a hiatus of a couple of years, he cast aside his chart-breaking fame and re-embraced his old love of techno, teaming up with Italy’s Santos in the studio and becoming a stalwart of Sven Väth’s scene-leading Cocoon Recordings, smashing everyone’s preconceptions of his work wide open. This period of resurrection saw the duo team under the banner of Mutant Clan, again breaking down musical barriers and giving the world their warped version of techno.

He’s a musician who will succeed at whatever he puts his hand to, and his next move is always highly anticipated. Behind the decks, he packs one of the hardest punches around, pulling you inside his hypnotic world and creating sets that live, breath and thump as one cohesive, gargantuan entity. So dedicated is he to his craft that he’s built a club on his own land – a Funktion One-packed barn next to his farmhouse in Germany where he rigorously tests out his newest productions and finds. Only a DJ and producer as innovative, technically brilliant and downright loveable could be worthy of an undertaking as prestigious and lauded as the mixing of a Balance compilation. This is Maas’ first official compilation in 9 years.

  • SESSION 634: GOOD RECORDS 10.15.10

    Mixed by Doc Delay

Collecting records for production and his own listening pleasure ultimately evolved into an offer to co-host a hip-hop show on WDCE FM in Richmond, Virginia. Starting in 1996, he held this Friday rush-hour spot for over four years, gaining the respect of indy and major label artists around the country. His radio personality also provided the opportunity to have dozens of guest artists on the show when they passed through town.

Since relocating to New York City in 2002, production once again has been the Doctor’s main focus, but this hasn’t stopped him from playing to rowdy crowds all over Manhattan, Brooklyn and touring the rest ofthe US, Canada, and Europe. If you were fortunate enough to attend any of Doc’s resident DJ nights in NYC, there’s a good chance you might have heard him moving the masses playing everything from Soul ballads to House classics.

He still has the humble outlook that DJing is much like that of any fan of music. He remains open to what he likes or plays, and prefers to see DJing as an opportunity to share music with others. It’s not a performance – after all, it’s all other just other people’s music, redefined.

Doc Delay’s projects have been featured in various media including:
The FaderThe New YorkerVibe, Wire, WFMU’s Beware of the Blog, and
Perlich’s Picks in Toronto, among others.

  • SESSION 633: GOOD RECORDS 10.15.10

    Mixed by Jonny Paycheck

  • SESSION 632: BLESS UP 07.22.10

    Mixed by o1o1 | Sepalcure | Nihal | Liondub

    Sepalcure

With Love Pressure, the latest release on UK Dubstep giant Hotflush Recordings, Sepalcure is making the case for US producers of the predominantly British sound. Sepalcure’s combination of  love for bass and ’90s house acapellas is the culmination of a cathartic two week collaboration between Travis Stewart (Machinedrum) and Praveen Sharma (Praveen & Benoît). Their mix of tribal dub, house and two step beats works equally well for both late nights in the club and rainy, introspective nights at home. Detroit techno chords cut through wooden beats, neon synths and dubbed out atmospherics.

  • SESSION 631: BLESS UP 07.15.10

Mixed by o1o1 | Praying Mantis | Liondub

    o1o1 (halcyon | nyc)
o1o1 is scratching his head. He has no grand statements to make about himself as a dj and new producer of the drum n bass sound that he cultivates. It is sometimes soulful, at other times tech-y, maybe minimal, and then at times undefinable. There is no scene here. No names to drop. He spins this brand of music every Saturday and Sunday at halcyon the shop, “the greatest record store in the world”, according to him. In the end, it’s all about the music, and who is attracted to it organically… the way a scene is made before a trend can be attached to it. o1o1 meets his co-conspirators in this new sound every week at halcyon. He is building the scene here, grassroots style, one head at a time.

  • SESSION 630: BLESS UP 07.08.10

Mixed by   mOma, Anthony Avatar & Liondub

    mOma

DJ mOma has enjoyed a successful spell as NYC’s best kept DJ secret. The cat is officially out of the bag however and that particular spell is now over: mOma is now celebrated as one of the rotten apple’s most creative and sought-after spinmeisters. His versatile approach to reading diverse crowds and rocking dance floors has seen him grace turntables from the City’s highest profile clubs (Tenjune / Cain / Lotus) to downtown’s most exclusive spots (105 Riv / Gold Bar / The Box).

His seamless blend of funk soul hip hop reggae house and choice contemporary “bangers” also caught the ear of the entertainment industry as his services have been requested by Maxwell, Jill Scott and George Clooney; his weekly “Good Spot” residency – alongside Stimulus every Monday at 105 Riv – has been heralded as New York’s best party by nightlife industry types; his critically acclaimed “Satisfy My Soul” mixtape series has been described as the perfect mixtape collection by his DJ peers and casual listeners alike. mOma is also collaborating with The Rub’s heavyweight DJ Eleven on the Special Delivery project which consists of a monthly mixtape release accompanied by a monthly session at NYC’s premier musical mecca, APT.

    percussionlab

Percussion Lab is a collective of like-minded artists, DJs, record labels and selectors. Since 2002 they’ve been curating an exclusive collection of live and DJ sets from their favorite artists, DJs and record labels. The site is open for DJs and Artists to submit, rate and comment on their own mixes. Praveen founded Percussion Lab with one goal in mind, to curate a collection of sets and radio shows which would bring a niche sound to a wider audience. Since then, the Percussion Lab collective has continually expanded to encompass a broader range of sounds, bringing artists such as Flying Lotus, Daedelus, Jimmy Edgar Khonnor to NYC to perform at events around town and playing an instrumental role in 2006?s BAPLab music and new media festival.
