Known for carving his way neatly through haunting electro-organs and dramatic synth-stabs, his production seems to demand ‘hands in the air’ moments at every turn, while his genre-crossing DJ sets call for all out dance floor warfare. Shigeto (Ghostly International | NYC)
Artists take on pseudonyms for a multitude of reasons, but in Zach Saginaw’s case, those reasons run deeper than most. Zach records under the name Shigeto. It’s his middle name; it’s also his grandfather’s name, a tribute to the Japanese branch of Zach’s family tree. Shigeto also means “to grow bigger”—appropriate, given Zach’s premature birth-weight of less than a pound. Today, Shigeto stands for Zach’s vividly beautiful electronic music. Beat- driven but given to richly textured sound design, rhythmically fractured but melodically sumptuous, Shigeto’s music is a bridge between the past and present, bringing the artist face to face with a creative legacy that spans decades. Zach was brought up on a steady diet of Michigan-bred music, as his father spoon-fed him old Motown and jazz records by the crateload. Zach picked up the drums at an early age, spending much of his childhood playing in the Detroit/Ann Arbor music scene. After nearly flunking out of high school—save for his music studies—Zach spent three years studying jazz at the New School in NYC and three more in London, where he began woodshedding, obsessed with learning electronic production. Soon enough, beats materialized, Zach moved to Brooklyn and took up the name Shigeto, and Zach’s peers began to take notice.Zach’s body of work has grown over the last few years to the tune of several EPs on Moodgadget as Shigeto and with A Setting Sun, a pair of EPs under the alias Frank Omura (another family-name reference), and remixes for Worst Friends, Praveen & Benoit, Tycho, Mux Mool, Charles Trees, A Setting Sun, Beautiful Bells, Shlohmo, and more. The Semi-Circle EP will be his first release with Ghostly International; the full-length Full Circle is on the horizon. Semi-Circle is a fiercely independent work of art, nominally indebted to instrumental hip-hop but, like Zach, straddling many worlds at once. Cool shades of ambient music, stuttering early IDM, dubstep sub-bass, and jazz melodicism color Shigeto’s palette, which he wields with a painterly attention to detail. As Ghostly International hits its 10th anniversary, Shigeto is one of the first of a wave of young artists who grew up influenced by the label’s early output. And again, names come into play. “Putting out this record on Ghostly isn’t just ‘getting signed,’ for me,” says Zach, “it’s becoming part of a family, an influence that I’ve respected forever. Praveen Sharma (Casette / Percussion Lab | NYC)
Praveen Sharma has been making music for most of his life, and has contributed releases to AI, Neo Ouija, and Expanding Records. He also runs Percussion Lab, a hub for underground electronic music and exclusive DJ sets, in addition to being an avid live performer and event organizer in New York City. Praveen released his debut Backed by Spirits on the now-defunct Neo Ouija imprint in early 2005. Not long after, Praveen returned from a   profound journey through his family’s native India with a minidisk full of field recordings and voices, forming the basis of Song Spun Simla, his second album released with Benoit Pioulard. His most recent work with Machinedrum under the alias Sepalcurehas garnered international acclaim and a solid string of releases thru the infamous Hotflush label headed byScuba. Their mix of Tribal Dub, House and Two-Step beats works equally well for both late nights in the club and rainy, introspective nights at home. David Last is a musician and visual artist living in Brooklyn NY. With Sasha Kaline(Alka_Rex), he is a founder of the Konque label & music project. Tracks range from electronic dance music to cinematic orchestral ambience depending on the setting. This is not surprising, as he’s been creating music for a variety of venues; the dancefloor, Imax film, video installation, children’s animation, and albums.  He currently releases in a variety of contexts with labels like Staubgold (Berlin), Konque (NYC), and Foundsound/Unfoundsound (Berlin). He has remixed for many others including Francois K’s WaveTec (NYC), indie psych-rock label The Social Registry (NYC) and Audio.NL (Rotterdam). His downtempo full-length dubut album the Push Pul is now in its second printing with The Agriculture (NYC), having gained respect from tough critics like Pitchforkmedia, and generating a sizable international cult following.

Philadelphia’s brazen Dev79, aka Gair Marking, has been bangin’ out the underground sounds for years. With an almost reckless abandon he attacks a barrage of genres (from UKG to Grime to Tropical to Dubstep to Rap and whatever else) to create his spin on the Street Bass style. He’s done recent remixes for +Verb, Guttstar, Kaiser, Raffertie, DZ, Starkey, BD1982, Gobs the Zombie, Mestizo, Dmn Days, Sduk and is soon to present a mixtape for up and coming r&b/reggae singer Sheba as well as working on a collab EP with Seattle’s Thrills (Sub Philo Music). Dev79 and Starkey are the masterminds behind the Seclusiasis empire and Street Bass Anthems series, as well as the Slit Jockey Records imprint with additional partner El Carnicero.

Nihal Ramchandani
Following a crash course in music taught by his older brother, Nihal got his turntables at the tender age of 13 so perhaps it’s not so surprising that music already runs deep in the veins of this young Texan. Already established in Houston’s Techno scene by age 17, Nihal arrived in NYC, immediately getting mixed up in the halcyon crew. Now two years of seasoning later, this young phenom has proven himself capable of stringing together deeper psychedelic strains of electronic music with a veteran sensibility. He continues to hone his craft and explore new territories while focusing on his internship with the NYC arm of Scuba’s Hotflush Recordings.

Golden Child

Hailing from Fort Greene, Brooklyn, Golden’s passion for music came at a very early age. Being exposed and going to clubs in the early ’90s literally spending his checks on music alone, DJing was his calling. His musical influences are deeply rooted in Hip-Hop, R&B, ’70s Funk, Rare Groove and Disco. At 17, he traveled to London and strongly followed the Jungle / Drum & Bass scene while working at an underground radio station where he met his mentors and favorite DJs. He got his first big break at 19 as a guest DJ at Webster Hall. Since then he has played New York’s finest clubs such as Shelter, APT, The Cooler, Sapphire, Baktun, The Lunatarium and the list goes on. Golden Child spins across the board from Drum & Bass Hip-Hop / R&B, Reggae, House, Dance Classics and Rare Grooves.

Enoe (BFM)
No stranger to NYC’s underground music scene, Enoe is amongst the latest wave of artists experimenting in the 140bpm realm, with mixes and productions exploring all the elements that help drive todays dance scene. In 2008 he was scouted and invited to join the Bass Fueled Mischief DJ crew, and soon became a favorite of the BFM fans. Now with plans of getting his first release, he is ready to make his mark, playing deep and melodic vibes, making it easy for all fans of electronic music to enjoy. Anthony Avatar
Anthony Avatar is the last of a dying breed, a true native New Yorker of almost three decades. Anthony was born & raised in the heart of downtown’s melting pot, growing up in The Chelsea Housing Projects, a place where little kids learn what their talents are quickly as a means of socio-economic survival. It is also the same neighborhood to foster the creative morale of Whoopi Goldberg, Grand Mixer DXT, The Wayans Brothers and Rakim, to name a few. Rhythm has always been a fundamental part of Anthony Avatar’s development. He can still call on his earliest memories of his neighborhood filled with Hip-hop on boom-boxes, deep house & disco pumping out of car systems, meringue in passionate flight from apartment windows, and the twilight mosaic of New York City after dark when all nightlife seemingly fled to the legendary Roxy.

Ant Avatar is 1/3rd of the Boogie Brothers Collective, formerly known as a group that makes and plays music for people to dance to. He plays purely vinyl dance music and is influenced by Wayne Ford, DJ Harvey, Mark Farina, Gene Farris, and Todd Terry. While playing all over New York at spots like Hammerstein Ballroom, Norwood, Hotel QT (alongside Shane Daddy,) Apt (alongside Neil Aline), and Canal Chapter, and holding residencies at Leux De Gamin, Ella (Wednesdays,) and Santos (Sundays,) Antony still aims to be the humblest of crowd-pleasers.

Also contributing to his creative influences are Anthony’s experiences skating for Zoo York & Supreme in ’97, B-Boying, reading, doing Graffiti pre, post & all through the Giuliani era. When asked what his goal is when he performs, Anthony simply stated, “ I want the guy in the corner that doesn’t even like dancing getting it ON on the dance floor!” (*Bio by BVD)

Max Echo (Dont Sleep NYC)
Max Echo grew up playing jazz and funk, discovered dub and drum and bass in the 90?s and fell in love with grime and dubstep in the noughts. He has been active in the US dubstep scene since 2007. His recent productions have centered on funky, garage and future bashment and his sets blend across the 140 – 120 bpm spectrum. Hertz Couture is a DJ/producer from Birmingham in the UK. Hertz Couture has been DJing for 15 years and has made his way through numerous musical styles, starting wih Hip-Hop and Breakbeats. Hertz Couture quickly fell in love with the art of turntablism and enjoyed mixing Funk, Soul and Reggae into his sets. Drum and Bass was next in line for the Hertz Couture treatment with all sub genres covered (except jump up). Hertz Couture enjoyed the longer more chilled out style of mixing DnB in contrast to the manic, never stop working and cutting style employed in Hip-Hop. And then there was Dubstep! Hertz Couture co-hosts a weekly Dubstep radio show called “Dubstation” every Wednesday 10-11.30pm (UK time) on www.rhubarbradio.comwith Boogie Dave (DBNB). They cover all styles of Dubstep music and have regular guest appearances and mixes on the show from DJs and producers from all over the world including Eskmo, Babylon System, Aries and more. Welfare is a 28 year old Irish Dubstep and Jungle Producer/DJ based in Dublin Ireland but currently producing in hermitage in the US. He plays DJ/live sets with (mostly) vinyl, Serato, Renoise and controllers…Welfare started mixing and DJing Techno in 2004 but has been focused on Jungle and Dubstep for the past 4 or 5 years. He’s gigged all over Ireland, the UK and played in a few spots on the continent too with the likes of Distance, Pinch, Hatcha, Joker, MRK1, RSD, Radikal Guru, Loefah, Caspa, Stagga, Guido, Chef, Doc Scott, Shitmat, Drokkr and many more… He started producing tracks about a year ago with about 25 choons in the catalogue to this point. Bookz (Dont Sleep NYC)

Bookz is a grime and dubstep producer located in Brooklyn, NY. An avid music fan from day one, Bookz has been involved with music of all genres for quite some time. Originally from VA / DC Bookz was involved with the local punk rock scene playing bass in various bands until hearing the new sounds of drum n bass. Grime & dubstep quickly grabbed his attention and in 2005 he established New York City’s premier grime crew, FIRST CITY, along with UK producer Nato. His tunes have had support from Newham Generals’ DJ Tubby and BBC Radio 1?s Tim Westwood among others. 2009 saw a steady release of top-notch material from the First City Records label and 2010 looks to be a very promising year with several instrumental EP’s out so far. His sets are a blend of his own hard-hitting production, grime and dubstep rudeness.

Their mix of tribal dub, house and two step beats works equally well for both late nights in the club and rainy, introspective nights at home. Detroit techno chords cut through wooden beats, neon synths and dubbed out atmospherics.

o1o1 is scratching his head. He has no grand statements to make about himself as a dj and new producer of the drum n bass sound that he cultivates. It is sometimes soulful, at other times tech-y, maybe minimal, and then at times undefinable. There is no scene here. No names to drop. He spins this brand of music every Saturday and Sunday at halcyon the shop, “the greatest record store in the world”, according to him. In the end, it’s all about the music, and who is attracted to it organically… the way a scene is made before a trend can be attached to it. o1o1 meets his co-conspirators in this new sound every week at halcyon. Sepalcure

Artists take on pseudonyms for a multitude of reasons, but in Zach Saginaw’s case, those reasons run deeper than most. Zach records under the name Shigeto. It’s his middle name; it’s also his grandfather’s name, a tribute to the Japanese branch of Zach’s family tree. Shigeto also means “to grow bigger”—appropriate, given Zach’s premature birth-weight of less than a pound. Today, Shigeto stands for Zach’s vividly beautiful electronic music. Beat-driven but given to richly textured sound design, rhythmically fractured but melodically sumptuous, Shigeto’s music is a bridge between the past and present, bringing the artist face to face with a creative legacy that spans decades.

Zach was brought up on a steady diet of Michigan-bred music, as his father spoon-fed him old Motown and jazz records by the crateload. Zach picked up the drums at an early age, spending much of his childhood playing in the Detroit/Ann Arbormusic scene. After nearly flunking out of high school—save for his music studies—Zach spent three years studying jazz at the New School in NYC and three more in London, where he began woodshedding, obsessed with learning electronic production. Soon enough, beats materialized, Zach moved to Brooklyn and took up the name Shigeto, and Zach’s peers began to take notice.

Zach’s body of work has grown over the last few years to the tune of several EPs on Moodgadget as Shigeto and with A Setting Sun, a pair of EPs under the alias Frank Omura (another family-name reference), and remixes for Worst Friends, Praveen & Benoit, Tycho, Mux Mool, Charles Trees, A Setting Sun, Beautiful Bells, Shlohmo, and more. The Semi-Circle EP will be his first release with Ghostly International; the full-length Full Circle is on the horizon. Semi-Circle is a fiercely independent work of art, nominally indebted to instrumental hip-hop but, like Zach, straddling many worlds at once. Cool shades of ambient music, stuttering early IDM, dubstep sub-bass, and jazz melodicism color Shigeto’s palette, which he wields with a painterly attention to detail. As Ghostly International hits its 10th anniversary, Shigeto is one of the first of a wave of young artists who grew up influenced by the label’s early output. And again, names come into play. “Putting out this record on Ghostly isn’t just ‘getting signed,’ for me,” says Zach, “it’s becoming part of a family, an influence that I’ve respected forever. That’s Full Circle.” Let’s just say the feeling’s mutual.

Both artists will also appear at the Legendary Two Sounds Clash event at Southpaw on Friday May 28th, 2010 in celebration of the CARIB LP launch, and Jahdan’s “The General” Video launch alongside a serious selection of heavyweight talent representing Jungle/Dubstep/Reggae and Dancehall on two incredible floors in Park Slope, Brooklyn.
Percussion Lab is a collective of like-minded artists, DJs, record labels and selectors.

Since 2002 they’ve been curating an exclusive collection of live and DJ sets from their favorite artists, DJs and record labels. The site is open for DJs and Artists to submit, rate and comment on their own mixes. Praveen founded Percussion Lab with one goal in mind, to curate a collection of sets and radio shows which would bring a niche sound to a wider audience. Since then, the Percussion Lab collective has continually expanded to encompass a broader range of sounds, bringing artists such as Flying Lotus, Daedelus, Jimmy Edgar Khonnor to NYC to perform at events around town and playing an instrumental role in 2006?s BAPLab music and new media festival.
