Doc Delay is a reluctant DJ.  Collecting records for production and his own listening pleasure ultimately evolved into an offer to co-host a hip-hop show on WDCE FM in Richmond, Virginia. Starting in 1996, he held this Friday rush-hour spot for over four years, gaining the respect of indy and major label artists around the country. His radio personality also provided the opportunity to have dozens of guest artists on the show when they passed through town.

Since relocating to New York City in 2002, production once again has been the Doctor’s main focus, but this hasn’t stopped him from playing to rowdy crowds all over Manhattan, Brooklyn and touring the rest ofthe US, Canada, and Europe. If you were fortunate enough to attend any of Doc’s resident DJ nights in NYC, there’s a good chance you might have heard him moving the masses playing everything from Soul ballads to House classics.

Delay may no longer be a reluctant DJ, but he still has the humble outlook that DJing is much like that of any fan of music. He remains open to what he likes or plays, and prefers to see DJing as an opportunity to share music with others. It’s not a performance – after all, it’s all other just other people’s music, redefined.

Enoe (BFM)
No stranger to NYC’s underground music scene, Enoe is amongst the latest wave of artists experimenting in the 140bpm realm, with mixes and productions exploring all the elements that help drive todays dance scene. In 2008 he was scouted and invited to join the Bass Fueled Mischief DJ crew, and soon became a favorite of the BFM fans. Now with plans of getting his first release, he is ready to make his mark, playing deep and melodic vibes, making it easy for all fans of electronic music to enjoy. Anthony Avatar
Anthony Avatar is the last of a dying breed, a true native New Yorker of almost three decades. Anthony was born & raised in the heart of downtown’s melting pot, growing up in The Chelsea Housing Projects, a place where little kids learn what their talents are quickly as a means of socio-economic survival. It is also the same neighborhood to foster the creative morale of Whoopi Goldberg, Grand Mixer DXT, The Wayans Brothers and Rakim, to name a few. Rhythm has always been a fundamental part of Anthony Avatar’s development. He can still call on his earliest memories of his neighborhood filled with Hip-hop on boom-boxes, deep house & disco pumping out of car systems, meringue in passionate flight from apartment windows, and the twilight mosaic of New York City after dark when all nightlife seemingly fled to the legendary Roxy.

Ant Avatar is 1/3rd of the Boogie Brothers Collective, formerly known as a group that makes and plays music for people to dance to. He plays purely vinyl dance music and is influenced by Wayne Ford, DJ Harvey, Mark Farina, Gene Farris, and Todd Terry. While playing all over New York at spots like Hammerstein Ballroom, Norwood, Hotel QT (alongside Shane Daddy,) Apt (alongside Neil Aline), and Canal Chapter, and holding residencies at Leux De Gamin, Ella (Wednesdays,) and Santos (Sundays,) Antony still aims to be the humblest of crowd-pleasers.

Also contributing to his creative influences are Anthony’s experiences skating for Zoo York & Supreme in ’97, B-Boying, reading, doing Graffiti pre, post & all through the Giuliani era. When asked what his goal is when he performs, Anthony simply stated, “ I want the guy in the corner that doesn’t even like dancing getting it ON on the dance floor!” (*Bio by BVD)

Max Echo (Dont Sleep NYC)
Max Echo grew up playing jazz and funk, discovered dub and drum and bass in the 90?s and fell in love with grime and dubstep in the noughts. He has been active in the US dubstep scene since 2007. His recent productions have centered on funky, garage and future bashment and his sets blend across the 140 – 120 bpm spectrum. Together with producers Bookz and Mad Scientist he formed the Don’t $leep NYC collective in February of 2010. Look for forthcoming releases from Max Echo on limited white label pressings out on Don’t $leep this fall.

Her passion for entertaining and love of dance infused with an urban sensibility, Winter defined her style through her residencies at world renowned NYC weeklies like Konkrete Jungle and Camouflage. In turn, she has been featured in several publications, including the NY Post, TimeOutNY, 1-42 Magazineand Teen Voices Magazine. As a co-founder of SisterNYC, Winter helped to develop & gain exposure for the talented all-female crew of DJs, producers and vocalists. She’s also competed in several DJ competitions, namely the Numark/Women Who Rock magazine competition as well as Iron DJ, held at NYC’s The Frying Pan. She was also featured in a music documentary by Julie Covello titled Prohibited Beatz

Lifeline (Survival – Brooklyn, NY)
Having been part of the NYC rave scene ever since his early teens, Lifeline first got involved DJing Techno about 12 years ago, which then quickly led to producing & recording engineering in a wide variety of styles.In 2002 Lifeline became one of the founding members of Brooklyn’s Blacklist Studios, and has spent countless hours behind the boards & the buttons,perfecting his craft & developing his sound. In 2005 Lifeline saw his first Jungle Drum & Bass release as part of the Intune Ragga Sessions CD, with a song called “Karma Sutra” featuring Bass Nacho & MC Navigator. Since then Lifeline has kept a low profile, but all the while staying up on the very latest dance music sounds.

Possibly separated at birth, EDG4R (Edgar Rojas) & STRAVINSKY (Erick Rojas) met in 2008. After realizing they had essentially identical taste in music, they formed TEAM ROJAS. Hailing from New York and Miami,FL, the DJ/production duo take direct influence from the old NY sound. Blending boogie, electro funk, Disco,and classic House to form varied mixes, edits, and forthcoming tracks.

Praveen Sharma (Casette NYC/Percussion Lab)
Praveen Sharma has been making music for most of his life, and has contributed releases to AI, NeoOuija, and Expanding Records. He also runs Percussion Lab, a hub for underground electronic musicand exclusive DJ sets, in addition to being an avid ive performer and event organizer in New York City.

Long established as one of the leading talents in the dubstep scene both through his own productions and the contributions of his label, Hotflush, to the talent pool, Scuba, aka Paul Rose, has been making inroads into the techno scene via Sub:Stance, his monthly event at Berghain/Panoramabar, and, more recently, his establishment of a new techno-centric alias and label, SCB.

Hertz Couture (Dubstation, Dubmatic, UK)
Hertz Couture is a DJ/producer from Birmingham in the UK. Hertz Couture has been DJing for 15 years and has made his way through numerous musical styles, starting wih Hip-Hop and Breakbeats. Hertz Couture quickly fell in love with the art of turntablism and enjoyed mixing Funk, Soul and Reggae into his sets. Drum and Bass was next in line for the Hertz Couture treatment with all sub genres covered (except jump up). Hertz Couture enjoyed the longer more chilled out style of mixing DnB in contrast to the manic, never stop working and cutting style employed in Hip-Hop. And then there was Dubstep! Hertz Couture co-hosts a weekly Dubstep radio show called “Dubstation” every Wednesday 10-11.30pm (UK time) on www.rhubarbradio.comwith Boogie Dave (DBNB). They cover all styles of Dubstep music and have regular guest appearances and mixes on the show from DJs and producers from all over the world including Eskmo, Babylon System, Aries and more. Hertz Couture can be found DJing at various Dubstep events around Birmingham and beyond including nights in London, Leeds and Czech Republic and is resident at the legendary Drop Beats Not Bombs and Dubmatic events. Hertz Couture is currently working on a couple of collaborations with other Birmingham producers and will be posting new tracks and mixes in the near future…

Welfare (DubCulture/!Kaboogie Records, IRL)
Welfare is a 28 year old Irish Dubstep and Jungle Producer/DJ based in Dublin Ireland but currently producing in hermitage in the US. He plays DJ/live sets with (mostly) vinyl, Serato, Renoise and controllers…Welfare started mixing and DJing Techno in 2004 but has been focused on Jungle and Dubstep for the past 4 or 5 years. He’s gigged all over Ireland, the UK and played in a few spots on the continent too with the likes of Distance, Pinch, Hatcha, Joker, MRK1, RSD, Radikal Guru, Loefah, Caspa, Stagga, Guido, Chef, Doc Scott, Shitmat, Drokkr and many more… He started producing tracks about a year ago with about 25 choons in the catalogue to this point. It seems Welfare was first released in May by 1Kaboogie records in the form of a Jungle banger entitled Supa Trupa http://soundcloud.com/welfare/supa-trupa-1 Welfare has hosted, for the past few years, a weekly radio show on the electronic pioneering Radio No Life in Dublin. The show entitled The Welfare Clinic, has hosted over 45 guests from the Dubstep, Jungle/DnB, IDM and hardcore scenes. Dub War
Dub War is the US’s original dubstep party, pushing boundaries and bass bins in New York City 4 years running. The event is held monthly at L.O.V.E., and features visiting guests at the forefront of the sound from the UK and worldwide alongside residents Dave Q, Joe Nice, Juakali, and Incyde. Expect futuristic bass music and the freshest dubplates straight off the press. Spanning the spectrum of tempos and styles, Dub War challenges audiences to be open to strange and unexpected sounds which defy convention but always hit hard on a heavy sound system. The Dub War crew has recently mixed forMaryanne Hobbs’ Experimental show on BBC Radio1, and have been featured in the New York Times and New York Magazine.

Max Echo grew up playing jazz and funk, discovered dub and drum and bass in the 90?s and fell in love with grime and dubstep in the noughts. He has been active in the US dubstep scene since 2007. His recent productions have centered on funky, garage and future bashment and his sets blend across the 140 – 120 bpm spectrum. Together with producers Bookz and Mad Scientist he formed the DSNYC collective in February of 2010. Look for forthcoming releases from Max Echo on limited white label pressings out on DontSleep this fall.

Bookz (Dont Sleep NYC)

Bookz is a grime and dubstep producer located in Brooklyn, NY. An avid music fan from day one, Bookz has been involved with music of all genres for quite some time. Originally from VA / DC Bookz was involved with the local punk rock scene playing bass in various bands until hearing the new sounds of drum n bass. Grime & dubstep quickly grabbed his attention and in 2005 he established New York City’s premier grime crew, FIRST CITY, along with UK producer Nato. His tunes have had support from Newham Generals’ DJ Tubby and BBC Radio 1?s Tim Westwood among others. 2009 saw a steady release of top-notch material from the First City Records label and 2010 looks to be a very promising year with several instrumental EP’s out so far. His sets are a blend of his own hard-hitting production, grime and dubstep rudeness.

Since 2002 they’ve been curating an exclusive collection of live and DJ sets from their favorite artists, DJs and record labels. The site is open for DJs and Artists to submit, rate and comment on their own mixes. Praveen founded Percussion Lab with one goal in mind, to curate a collection of sets and radio shows which would bring a niche sound to a wider audience. Since then, the Percussion Lab collective has continually expanded to encompass a broader range of sounds, bringing artists such as Flying Lotus, Daedelus, Jimmy Edgar Khonnor to NYC to perform at events around town and playing an instrumental role in 2006?s BAPLab music and new media festival.

Sepalcure

With Love Pressure, the latest release on UK Dubstep giant Hotflush Recordings, Sepalcure is making the case for US producers of the predominantly British sound. Sepalcure’s combination of love for bass and ’90s house acapellas is the culmination of a cathartic two week collaboration between Travis Stewart (Machinedrum) and Praveen Sharma (Praveen & Benoît). Their mix of tribal dub, house and two step beats works equally well for both late nights in the club and rainy, introspective nights at home. Detroit techno chords cut through wooden beats, neon synths and dubbed out atmospherics. Look out for the Sepalcure full length debut on Hotflush later this year.

Artists take on pseudonyms for a multitude of reasons, but in Zach Saginaw’s case, those reasons run deeper than most. Zach records under the name Shigeto. It’s his middle name; it’s also his grandfather’s name, a tribute to the Japanese branch of Zach’s family tree. Shigeto also means “to grow bigger”—appropriate, given Zach’s premature birth-weight of less than a pound. Today, Shigeto stands for Zach’s vividly beautiful electronic music. Beat-driven but given to richly textured sound design, rhythmically fractured but melodically sumptuous, Shigeto’s music is a bridge between the past and present, bringing the artist face to face with a creative legacy that spans decades.

Zach was brought up on a steady diet of Michigan-bred music, as his father spoon-fed him old Motown and jazz records by the crateload. Zach picked up the drums at an early age, spending much of his childhood playing in the Detroit/Ann Arbormusic scene. After nearly flunking out of high school—save for his music studies—Zach spent three years studying jazz at the New School in NYC and three more in London, where he began woodshedding, obsessed with learning electronic production. Soon enough, beats materialized, Zach moved to Brooklyn and took up the name Shigeto, and Zach’s peers began to take notice.

Zach’s body of work has grown over the last few years to the tune of several EPs on Moodgadget as Shigeto and with A Setting Sun, a pair of EPs under the alias Frank Omura (another family-name reference), and remixes for Worst Friends, Praveen & Benoit, Tycho, Mux Mool, Charles Trees, A Setting Sun, Beautiful Bells, Shlohmo, and more. The Semi-Circle EP will be his first release with Ghostly International; the full-length Full Circle is on the horizon. Semi-Circle is a fiercely independent work of art, nominally indebted to instrumental hip-hop but, like Zach, straddling many worlds at once. Cool shades of ambient music, stuttering early IDM, dubstep sub-bass, and jazz melodicism color Shigeto’s palette, which he wields with a painterly attention to detail. As Ghostly International hits its 10th anniversary, Shigeto is one of the first of a wave of young artists who grew up influenced by the label’s early output. And again, names come into play. “Putting out this record on Ghostly isn’t just ‘getting signed,’ for me,” says Zach, “it’s becoming part of a family, an influence that I’ve respected forever. That’s Full Circle.” Let’s just say the feeling’s mutual.

Machinedrum opens the set with his own brand of focused heat, Praveen brings in the lovestep and deepdubstep and liondub closes up with a bit of both. Eclectic, souldful, yet hard hitting and precisely executed. Every Thursday for the past 2 years, LionDub has hosted the infamous, well rounded and incredibly fun Blessup in store sessions at Halcyon the record shop in DUMBO Brooklyn from 6-9pm. Over the years we’ve had an array of amazing dj’s and producers pass through including Distance, Cyrus, Joe Nice, Benny Page, Ramadanman and Jahdan Blakkamoore just to name a few. 

“BlessUp” : On the fifth day he created bass, then he took an Amen break. And so it was, that on Thursdays the high priests of low frequency would gather at the record store in Brooklyn to perform the ancient rites of the turntable… It is in this solemn spirit of praise to all that rumbles the jungle that the cult we call halcyon presents our latest, soon to be habitual ritual, Bless Up! – Thursdays from 6-9pm at halcyon the shop and archived on dailysession.com Funky monks take note, Bless Up! is three hours of anything-but-silent devotion to the woofer ripping trinity of Drum and Bass, Dubstep and Dub Reggae.
