  • SESSION 896: SLOW DISCO SATURDAYS 01.08.11

Mixed by Beg To Differ (aka My Cousin Roy and Nick Chacona), Matthew Moffe

My Cousin Roy (The Wurst Music Co.)
Roy Dank (aka My Cousin Roy) is the mind behind the “Wurst Edits,” imprint. The New York label, which launched in 2006 boasted radical reworkings of yesteryear’s clandestine disco by the likes of label head Roy Dank aka My Cousin Roy and his talented friends, including Runaway, who went on to produced acclaimed releases for DFA and Rekids; the multi-talented producer, DJ and illustrator Doug Lee aka Lee Douglas, Douglas Sound and one-half of TBD (with Justin Vandervolgen) and Stallions (with Lovefingers); and Eamon Harkin, part of the NYC party juggernaut that is Sunday Best and Mister Saturday Night. The edits received support from esteemed DJs as far as wide as 2ManyDJs, Carl Craig, Harvey, Erol Alkan, James Murphy, Simian Mobile Disco, and Tim Sweeney, amongst many others. In early 2009, Roy teamed up with designers Josh Clancy and Travis Stearns to take the label’s visual aeshetic to the proverbial next level. Come July of that year, the label evolved into The Wurst Music Co with the release of Brennan Green’s My First House, quite possibly the cult producer’s most dance floor savvy work to date. Wurst has gone from strength to strength since with releases from Neurotic Drum Band, Reade Truth, Great Weekend, and Ulysses. The Wurst Has Yet To Come…

    Nick Chacona (Hector Works)
Nick Chacona is one of New York’s disco-house mainstays and over the course of his 15-year career as a DJ and producer has become one of the city’s most respected underground talents within its vibrant dance music scene. In a DJ capacity, Nick is as versatile as you will find. He began spinning over 15 years ago, strictly playing reggae but shortly thereafter fell in love with House & Disco. Never one to let the crowd down, Nick’s sets are filled with energy, finesse, and diversity flowing from Nu Disco, House, Techno, Italo and classics—whatever is required in the moment. He has played across the US from NY to San Francisco, as well as Brazil, Germany, Spain, Poland, Romania, Belgium, Sweden, Serbia, Holland, and the UK. His production skills are just as dynamic as his style behind the decks and over the course of his career has spread his skills far and wide and garnered a lengthy discography under his belt. Over the years his productions have grown to encompass elements of sound from across the world of dance music, melding the arpeggiated sounds of Rimini, the trackiness of Chicago, minimalism of Berlin, and dubbed out vibes of Kingston, Jamaica sometimes in the same track. He began producing in 1999 under the Version Eternal moniker for NY label Homestyle Cooking. Since that time Nick has gone on to release tracks on renowned labels Mood Music, 2020 Vision, Ben Watt’s Buzzin Fly, Saw, Dogtown, Bearfunk, and the inaugural release for Prins Thomas’s Internasjonal.

    Matthew Moffre (Drrtyhaze)
Matthew Moffre, a former (and self-acclaimed) “Shelter head” has been a staple on the scene as a DJ for roughly 18 years. Best known as one-half of the Drrtyhaze duo, Moffre, alongside his production partner have been actively producing since 2006, currently boasting a lengthy discography of original productions and remixes. At the turn of the New Year the team has a slew of exciting new releases on respected international labels such as UK’s Redux and Under the Shade as well as Germany’s Tirk and Redux imprints. In addition to their avid music making the two are frequent guests at parties such as the legendary classic school house-based Play It Loud series. When running solo Moffre goes under the Love Tempo moniker, which he also dubs his monthly party now nearing its one-year mark. His tracks and mixes can be found onwww.beatsandwords.com.

  • SESSION 879 : BLESS UP 03.10.11

Mixed by Liondub, Taimur & Anthony Avatar

  • SESSION 840 : BLESS UP 02.24.11

Mixed by Liondub, David Last, Nukka Jones & Praveen

    David Last (Konque/theAgriculture)

David Last is a musician and visual artist living in Brooklyn NY. With Sasha Kaline(Alka_Rex), he is a founder of the Konque label & music project. Tracks range from electronic dance music to cinematic orchestral ambience depending on the setting. This is not surprising, as he’s been creating music for a variety of venues; the dancefloor, Imax film, video installation, children’s animation, and albums.  He currently releases in a variety of contexts with labels like Staubgold (Berlin), Konque (NYC), and Foundsound/Unfoundsound (Berlin). He has remixed for many others including Francois K’s WaveTec (NYC), indie psych-rock label The Social Registry (NYC) and Audio.NL (Rotterdam). His downtempo full-length dubut album the Push Pul is now in its second printing with The Agriculture (NYC), having gained respect from tough critics like Pitchforkmedia, and generating a sizable international cult following.

Praveen Sharma (Casette / Percussion Lab | NYC)

Praveen Sharma has been making music for most of his life, and has contributed releases to AI, Neo Ouija, and Expanding Records. He also runs Percussion Lab, a hub for underground electronic music and exclusive DJ sets, in addition to being an avid live performer and event organizer in New York City. Praveen released his debut Backed by Spirits on the now-defunct Neo Ouija imprint in early 2005. Not long after, Praveen returned from a profound journey through his family’s native India with a minidisk full of field recordings and voices, forming the basis of Song Spun Simla, his second album released with Benoit Pioulard. His most recent work with Machinedrum under the alias Sepalcure has garnered international acclaim and a solid string of releases thru the infamous Hotflush label headed by Scuba. Their mix of Tribal Dub, House and Two-Step beats works equally well for both late nights in the club and rainy, introspective nights at home. Detroit Techno chords cut through wooden beats, neon synths and dubbed out atmospherics, leading the always looking for the next thing music press to coin the term “Love Step” to describe Sepalcure’s effect.

  • SESSION 833 : BLESS UP 02.17.11

Mixed by Liondub, Nihal, FaltyDL & Dev79

    FaltyDL (Planet Mu/Rush Hour/Ramp | NYC)
FaltyDL is Drew Lustman outta New York City. He’s making garage ‘n stuff with his hands. Nostalgic tracks immersed in the old New York and Chicago sound yet creating a more subtle futuristic Big Apple version mashing together influences from Hip-Hop, Dubstep, Garage, Soul, Jungle and Electronica creating his own NYG. NYG. NYG.

    Dev79 (Seclusiasis/Slit Jockey | Philly)
Philadelphia’s brazen Dev79, aka Gair Marking, has been bangin’ out the underground sounds for years. With an almost reckless abandon he attacks a barrage of genres (from UKG to Grime to Tropical to Dubstep to Rap and whatever else) to create his spin on the Street Bass style. He’s done recent remixes for +Verb, Guttstar, Kaiser, Raffertie, DZ, Starkey, BD1982, Gobs the Zombie, Mestizo, Dmn Days, Sduk and is soon to present a mixtape for up and coming r&b/reggae singer Sheba as well as working on a collab EP with Seattle’s Thrills (Sub Philo Music). Dev79 and Starkey are the masterminds behind the Seclusiasis empire and Street Bass Anthems series, as well as the Slit Jockey Records imprint with additional partner El Carnicero.

    Mixed By Rockman,Krinjah,Anthony Avatar,Liondub,0101

    “Bless Up!”
On the fifth day he created bass, then he took an Amen break. And so it was, that on Thursdays the high priests of low frequency would gather at the record store in Brooklyn to perform the ancient rites of the turntable… It is in this solemn spirit of praise to all that rumbles the jungle that the cult we call halcyon presents our latest, soon to be habitual ritual, Bless Up! – Thursdays from 6-9pm at halcyon the shop and broadcast live on dailysession.com. Funky monks take note, Bless Up! is three hours of anything-but-silent devotion to the woofer ripping trinity of Drum and Bass, Dubstep and Dub Reggae. Our own pied pontiff, Liondub administers the wax sacraments alongside a rotating cast of cardinals representing NYC’s holiest DJ diocese. Visiting saints make miraculous appearances and as always, there’s no tithe at the door and plenty of alms for the poor, so you can save while being saved.
Bless Up with us on Facebook!

    Golden Child

Hailing from Fort Greene, Brooklyn, Golden’s passion for music came at a very early age. Being exposed and going to clubs in the early ’90s literally spending his checks on music alone, DJing was his calling. His musical influences are deeply rooted in Hip-Hop, R&B, ’70s Funk, Rare Groove and Disco. At 17, he traveled to London and strongly followed the Jungle / Drum & Bass scene while working at an underground radio station where he met his mentors and favorite DJs. He got his first big break at 19 as a guest DJ at Webster Hall. Since then he has played New York’s finest clubs such as Shelter, APT, The Cooler, Sapphire, Baktun, The Lunatarium and the list goes on. Golden Child spins across the board from Drum & Bass Hip-Hop / R&B, Reggae, House, Dance Classics and Rare Grooves.

His recent productions have centered on funky, garage and future bashment and his sets blend across the 140 – 120 bpm spectrum. Mixed by o1o1 | Sepalcure | Nihal | Liondub

    Sepalcure

With Love Pressure, the latest release on UK Dubstep giant Hotflush Recordings, Sepalcure is making the case for US producers of the predominantly British sound. Sepalcure’s combination of  love for bass and ’90s house acapellas is the culmination of a cathartic two week collaboration between Travis Stewart (Machinedrum) and Praveen Sharma (Praveen & Benoît). Their mix of tribal dub, house and two step beats works equally well for both late nights in the club and rainy, introspective nights at home. Detroit techno chords cut through wooden beats, neon synths and dubbed out atmospherics.

  • SESSION 631: BLESS UP 07.15.10

Mixed by o1o1 | Praying Mantis | Liondub

    o1o1 (halcyon | nyc)
o1o1 is scratching his head. He has no grand statements to make about himself as a dj and new producer of the drum n bass sound that he cultivates. It is sometimes soulful, at other times tech-y, maybe minimal, and then at times undefinable. There is no scene here. No names to drop. He spins this brand of music every Saturday and Sunday at halcyon the shop, “the greatest record store in the world”, according to him. In the end, it’s all about the music, and who is attracted to it organically… the way a scene is made before a trend can be attached to it. o1o1 meets his co-conspirators in this new sound every week at halcyon. He is building the scene here, grassroots style, one head at a time.
