• ALGO RHYTHM & PLAN B RECORDINGS AT NATIONAL UNDERGROUND

NYC’s Plan B Recordings is teaming up with the Algo Rhythm crew to bring you a night of seriously deep dance floor business. Merging Frequencies is an effort to bring together two distinct sensibilities of the local electronic underground for a post-summer celebration.

The uptown label Plan B has slowly materialized over the past 4 years into a purveyor of some of the most dense, heavyweight dance floor sounds on the planet—sounds that have crept into many a record bag as a result. Label head and seasoned house vet DJ Spider has cultivated a sound that pulverizes the past and welds the bits into bass heavy tracks with a jagged industrial edge. His most recent offerings—a pair of collaborations with Chicago’s own Hakim Murphy—show that dark sound refracted into subterranean sci-fi meditations and more upbeat grooving dance floor burners. Spider will be on hand that evening to demonstrate why so many are now paying attention to what he’s spent years building. Plan B label co-head Dakini 9, aka Lola, will also be in attendance to show her side of the Plan B sound—the more meditative and melodic strains. Her discography may be slim, but she brings 15 years of experience behind the decks so expect some deep atmospheric funk delivered via wax—as it should be.

Algo Rhythm organizers JM De Frias of Sequencias and A. Arias will be returning with their bloated cache of black plastic wonderments—and they’re not afraid to use them. You’ve been to their parties, yes? Marcellus Pittman? Sex Tags Mania? DVS1? WT Records? JTC? They have hosted and held their own against them all. So do come early, stay late and get ready for a truly diverse night of some of the finest jams on offer. Also come down to say good bye to Spider as he will be going on tour to Europe right after the party.

    Date / Thursday, 11 October 2012
    Time / 10:00pm – 6:00am
Venue / National Underground / 159 East Houston St New York, NY 10002

  • EVENTS: CROSSROADS -LOU GORBEA-

Anyone who knows Louie “Lou” Gorbea probably knows his roots are in dance (danced with Alvin Ailey and American Ballet Theatre). Those who love his work will probably agree that his excellence as a DJ and producer spring from his dancer’s intuitive understanding of how music moves people, both body and spirit. Lou’s focus on audience response makes each of his sets unique and infuses his production work with an essence that can simply cannot be faked.

There are very few DJs that capture the imagination so thoroughly and this man is certainly one of those few. There are few who can cross genres fearlessly, Lou is most certainly one of them.

This veteran DJ brings the soulful heat with a touch of Latin flavor, and a deep knowledge of music across genres and eras, incorporating diverse sounds, classic rock, disco & R&B through Latin and House styles. He is famous for spinning electrifying old school sets and burning up the dance floor with a blend of the classic and the new.

  • EVENTS: WINTER MADNESS MEETS VINYLMANIA RECORDS

Vinyl is the message that we are preaching. With the rise of the digital age some individuals like ourselves that care about sound seek to preserve the art of recording on wax. Vinyl Mania’s founder Charlie Grappone has been that staple in New York City Dance Music Culture, with over 30 years in the business we welcome the man who influenced so many records to so many Famous DJ’s worldwide! Names like Larry Levan, Danny Krivit, DJ Spinna (to name a few) would buy records from Charlie’s store regularly. Especially since the store was located around the block from the legendary Paradise Garage, it became THE mecca for DJs to find THAT record Larry played the night before; since Vinylmania carried exclusive test presses!! It was also the workplace and home of DJ’s Alix Alvarez, Pal Joey, Adam Scott and many other real music people.

We are set to pay homage to a TRUE New York City Legend; the record store and the person who created it!
    Charlie Grappone!
If you like the snap crackle and pop like the rest of us, this is one event you don’t want to miss!

  • EVENTS: AQUA-BOOTY W/DJSPUN, GREG CUOCO & MIKE SERVITO

Aqua-Booty! is back this month with more great music to get your groove on with special guest Mike Servito (Ghostly International) who will celebrate his Birthday with us!!!!!!!!!!!

Brought to you by Good Peoples Entertainment, Aqua-Booty! have been serving up the best music in NYC since 1993!

As always residents DJ Spun (Rong Music) and Greg Cuoco (Aqua-Booty Records) will be bringing out the best records in their collections for your dancing pleasure.

    Mike Servito:
Mike Servito is a DJ’s DJ — a lifelong music fanatic with a truly unique ability to move a dance floor. Fearless in his seamless transitions from one style to another, Servito has an unpredictability and a deep trust in his music knowledge that has garnered him a cult following and made him an in-demand DJ the world over.

Although Servito is a NYC transplant, his DJ style is unmistakably Detroit. Inspired by Detroit radio of the ‘80s and the city’s local DJs in the ‘90s, Servito came of age in a flourishing electronic music scene, making his debut in 1995 and immediately gaining the attention and respect of his peers and local techno heroes. After a brief hiatus, Servito was lured back into the game through the vigorous encouragement of his close friend Magda, and returned to the DJ realm in 2002. Servito redefined himself, finding inspiration in the new generation of electronic-music producers and DJs.
    Mike Servito

In 2008, Servito became the newest addition to Ghostly’s DJ roster, and has happily returned to DJing and traveling the world playing his favorite music

  • EVENTS: SOLID “SUMMER OF LOVE” IN TOKYO

Solid is back on Saturday 13th for a special “Summer Of Love” ! ! ! Celebrating the classic house music vibes from yesteryear and today, along with the good people who make it happen, our mid summer Solid special is pleased to welcome special guest from London, UK –
the up and coming Deejay Mista Nugget ! ! !

Starting his career as one of the leading underground MCs in the UK drum and bass and two step/garage scenes, Nugget toured with top artists Goldie, High Contrast, Robbie Craig, Noel Mckoy, and Miss Dynamite. With his verbal flair, Nugget became known for his ability to hype up stadium crowds with his tireless energy …

However, his true passion was ignited when he turned his hand to DJing in the early 2000`s immersing himself in the nascent London soulful house and broken beat scenes. Building a name for himself as a DJ versatile enough to cross over between hiphop, deep house, garage, broken beat, and rare groove all within one set, Nugget soon established residencies through out London, including his own deep house night Hot Yoga.

As a producer, Nugget has done original and remix work for various artists and labels, with critical acclaim from labels such as Defected and MN2S, as well as DJ support from Phil Asher, Tony Humphries. Louie Vega, Nick Holder and more …

Making his Japan debut at Solid, Nugget is set to showcase the deeper shades of house, with records by the likes of Osunlade, Black Coffee, Lovebirds, Peven Everett, and Franck Roger filling his box. Throw in a little Tribe Called Quest, Foreign Exchange, and Slum Village, and you`ve got the “Hot Yoga” sound served right up courtesy of one of the most talented up-and-coming DJs from the UK – Deejay Mista Nugget ! ! !

Throw in the Solid resident DJs – Nebu Soku aka Kai and Megumi, Marshall, as well as smorgasbord of underground house music talent in the second room, and Saturday August.13th promises to an unforgettable night ! Thus, celebrating what we call “the summer of love,” a return to the roots of Solid and what good house music is all about – dope music, fun people, and good times !
    Come and join us !

  • EVENTS: LOOKING AT MUSIC 3.0

    By MoMA P.S 1

Looking at Music 3.0, the third in a series of exhibitions exploring the influence of music on contemporary art practices, focuses on New York in the 1980s and 1990s. In this dynamic period, imaginative forms of street art spread across the five boroughs, articulating the counter-culture tenor of the times. As the city transitioned from bankruptcy to solvency, graffiti, media, and performance artists took advantage of low rents and collaborated on ad hoc works shown in alternative spaces and underground clubs. Appropriation, also known as remixing, thrived. Approximately 70 works from a wide range of artists and musicians will be on view, including works by the Beastie Boys, Kathleen Hanna and Le Tigre, Keith Haring, Christian Marclay, Steven Parrino, Run DMC, and Joanie 4 Jackie, a video chain letter founded by Miranda July.
