  • SESSION 902: SLOW DISCO SATURDAYS 02.05.11

Mixed by Jkriv, Son Of Sound

    Jkriv (Deep&Disco)
JKriv (Jason Kriveloff) is a man of many musical hats. As a founding member, bass-player, and co-songwriter/producer for the live-house band Tortured Soul, he has toured the world and contributed to staples of the 2000-something deep house oevre. Lately he’s been collecting his forays into the world of DJing and production under the moniker DEEP&DISCO, which aptly describes the sound and style that informs his musical approach. Having amassed a sizeable following of discophiles around the globe through his signature-crafted Disco edits (yes, those!), 2011 will see the launch of Deep&Disco Recordings, a home for both his original productions and contributions from Lou Teti, Blacklodge, Sleazy McQueen, Space Ranger and more. Additionally, J is a lover of small animals, fountain cokes, and long walks through rat-infested, trash-covered Brooklyn streets.

Son Of Sound (Speak Recordings | NYC)
If creative synergy can be traced to a specific time and place, New York during the turn of the ’80s would be the influential epicenter for producer/DJ Henry Maldonado aka Son of Sound. Born into a social and economically turbulent, Disco crazed New York City in July of ’71, Henry’s early musical influence would come in the form of house parties. His father, Enrique Maldonado, a Latin percussionist with an eclectic record collection was the maestro in charge of programming a steady diet of Disco, Soul and of course Latin.Henry’s prominent experiences would derive from the Post-Disco/pre-Hip-Hop, generation-X epoch of the early ’80s. Hip-Hop had spread beyond the Bronx and into the remaining boroughs. Disco was fighting for its survival, fusing with Punk Rock, Salsa, Electro and Rap. Electro pioneers such as Kraftwerk, Man Parrish and Arthur Baker laid the template for electronic dance music. Radio mix-show DJ’s such as John “Jelly Bean” Benitez, Red Alert, Latin Rascals and Tony Humphries would serve as Henry’s mentors in the art of the mix.

  • SESSION 896: SLOW DISCO SATURDAYS 01.08.11

Mixed by Beg To Differ (aka My Cousin Roy and Nick Chacona), Matthew Moffe

My Cousin Roy (The Wurst Music Co.)
Roy Dank (aka My Cousin Roy) is the mind behind the “Wurst Edits,” imprint. The New York label, which launched in 2006 boasted radical reworkings of yesteryear’s clandestine disco by the likes of label head Roy Dank aka My Cousin Roy and his talented friends, including Runaway, who went on to produced acclaimed releases for DFA and Rekids; the multi-talented producer, DJ and illustrator Doug Lee aka Lee Douglas, Douglas Sound and one-half of TBD (with Justin Vandervolgen) and Stallions (with Lovefingers); and Eamon Harkin, part of the NYC party juggernaut that is Sunday Best and Mister Saturday Night. The edits received support from esteemed DJs as far as wide as 2ManyDJs, Carl Craig, Harvey, Erol Alkan, James Murphy, Simian Mobile Disco, and Tim Sweeney, amongst many others. In early 2009, Roy teamed up with designers Josh Clancy and Travis Stearns to take the label’s visual aeshetic to the proverbial next level. Come July of that year, the label evolved into The Wurst Music Co with the release of Brennan Green’s My First House, quite possibly the cult producer’s most dance floor savvy work to date. Wurst has gone from strength to strength since with releases from Neurotic Drum Band, Reade Truth, Great Weekend, and Ulysses. The Wurst Has Yet To Come…

    Nick Chacona (Hector Works)
Nick Chacona is one of New York’s disco-house mainstays and over the course of his 15-year career as a DJ and producer has become one of the city’s most respected underground talents within its vibrant dance music scene. In a DJ capacity, Nick is as versatile as you will find. He began spinning over 15 years ago, strictly playing reggae but shortly thereafter fell in love with House & Disco. Never one to let the crowd down, Nick’s sets are filled with energy, finesse, and diversity flowing from Nu Disco, House, Techno, Italo and classics—whatever is required in the moment. He has played across the US from NY to San Francisco, as well as Brazil, Germany, Spain, Poland, Romania, Belgium, Sweden, Serbia, Holland, and the UK. His production skills are just as dynamic as his style behind the decks and over the course of his career has spread his skills far and wide and garnered a lengthy discography under his belt. Over the years his productions have grown to encompass elements of sound from across the world of dance music, melding the arpeggiated sounds of Rimini, the trackiness of Chicago, minimalism of Berlin, and dubbed out vibes of Kingston, Jamaica sometimes in the same track. He began producing in 1999 under the Version Eternal moniker for NY label Homestyle Cooking. Since that time Nick has gone on to release tracks on renowned labels Mood Music, 2020 Vision, Ben Watt’s Buzzin Fly, Saw, Dogtown, Bearfunk, and the inaugural release for Prins Thomas’s Internasjonal.

    Matthew Moffre (Drrtyhaze)
Matthew Moffre, a former (and self-acclaimed) “Shelter head” has been a staple on the scene as a DJ for roughly 18 years. Best known as one-half of the Drrtyhaze duo, Moffre, alongside his production partner have been actively producing since 2006, currently boasting a lengthy discography of original productions and remixes. At the turn of the New Year the team has a slew of exciting new releases on respected international labels such as UK’s Redux and Under the Shade as well as Germany’s Tirk and Redux imprints. In addition to their avid music making the two are frequent guests at parties such as the legendary classic school house-based Play It Loud series. When running solo Moffre goes under the Love Tempo moniker, which he also dubs his monthly party now nearing its one-year mark. His tracks and mixes can be found onwww.beatsandwords.com.

  • SESSION 883: BLESS UP 03.24.11

Mixed by Lifeline, Shigeto, Nooka Jones

    Shigeto (Ghostly International | NYC)
Artists take on pseudonyms for a multitude of reasons, but in Zach Saginaw’s case, those reasons run deeper than most. Zach records under the name Shigeto. It’s his middle name; it’s also his grandfather’s name, a tribute to the Japanese branch of Zach’s family tree. Shigeto also means “to grow bigger”—appropriate, given Zach’s premature birth-weight of less than a pound. Today, Shigeto stands for Zach’s vividly beautiful electronic music. Beat- driven but given to richly textured sound design, rhythmically fractured but melodically sumptuous, Shigeto’s music is a bridge between the past and present, bringing the artist face to face with a creative legacy that spans decades. Zach was brought up on a steady diet of Michigan-bred music, as his father spoon-fed him old Motown and jazz records by the crateload. Zach picked up the drums at an early age, spending much of his childhood playing in the Detroit/Ann Arbor music scene. After nearly flunking out of high school—save for his music studies—Zach spent three years studying jazz at the New School in NYC and three more in London, where he began woodshedding, obsessed with learning electronic production. Soon enough, beats materialized, Zach moved to Brooklyn and took up the name Shigeto, and Zach’s peers began to take notice.Zach’s body of work has grown over the last few years to the tune of several EPs on Moodgadget as Shigeto and with A Setting Sun, a pair of EPs under the alias Frank Omura (another family-name reference), and remixes for Worst Friends, Praveen & Benoit, Tycho, Mux Mool, Charles Trees, A Setting Sun, Beautiful Bells, Shlohmo, and more. The Semi-Circle EP will be his first release with Ghostly International; the full-length Full Circle is on the horizon. Semi-Circle is a fiercely independent work of art, nominally indebted to instrumental hip-hop but, like Zach, straddling many worlds at once. Cool shades of ambient music, stuttering early IDM, dubstep sub-bass, and jazz melodicism color Shigeto’s palette, which he wields with a painterly attention to detail. As Ghostly International hits its 10th anniversary, Shigeto is one of the first of a wave of young artists who grew up influenced by the label’s early output. And again, names come into play. “Putting out this record on Ghostly isn’t just ‘getting signed,’ for me,” says Zach, “it’s becoming part of a family, an influence that I’ve respected forever. That’s Full Circle.” Let’s just say the feeling’s mutual.

Shigeto tracks are available for download in mp3 and wav format on halcyondigi.com

Praveen Sharma (Casette / Percussion Lab | NYC)
Praveen Sharma has been making music for most of his life, and has contributed releases to AI, Neo Ouija, and Expanding Records. He also runs Percussion Lab, a hub for underground electronic music and exclusive DJ sets, in addition to being an avid live performer and event organizer in New York City. Praveen released his debut Backed by Spirits on the now-defunct Neo Ouija imprint in early 2005. Not long after, Praveen returned from a   profound journey through his family’s native India with a minidisk full of field recordings and voices, forming the basis of Song Spun Simla, his second album released with Benoit Pioulard. His most recent work with Machinedrum under the alias Sepalcurehas garnered international acclaim and a solid string of releases thru the infamous Hotflush label headed byScuba. Their mix of Tribal Dub, House and Two-Step beats works equally well for both late nights in the club and rainy, introspective nights at home. Detroit Techno chords cut through wooden beats, neon synths and dubbed out atmospherics, leading the always looking for the next thing music press to coin the term “Love Step” to describe Sepalcure’s effect. www.percussionlab.com

  • SESSION 862: THE BANDWAGON 02.16.11

Mixed by Shadi Megall & Taimur Agha

    Shadi Megallaa
The newest Techno guru on team halcyon, Shadi was raised in Abu Dhabi where there wasn’t much electronic music culture to be had. He caught the DJ bug while studying Architecture in Lawrence, Kansas circa ’97 and was producing his own music by 2000. His first release came out on respected Danish imprint Tic Tac Toe and was followed by tunes forKalimari, Produkt Schallplatten, and Dilek amongst others. Along the way Shadi made a major contribution to the fledgling underground scene in his home town with the Boogie Box party, founded in co-horts with buddy Hassan Alwan of the Buy You Sell Me label. A full length for Igloo Pop recorded while living in Zurich stands as Shadi’s proudest musical achievement thus far, but a slew of new productions completed since he relocated to Brooklyn earlier this year are set for 2011 release, making Shadi a hot producer to watch.

  • NEWS: PUNK AND HIPHOP @ MORRISON HOTEL GALLERY

    By Glenwood

Legendary music photographers Janette Beckman and David Corio (left and right, below) have an excellent exhibition going on now at the Morrison Hotel Gallery on Bowery, right next to the old CBGB (which is now a John Varvatos outlet), and if you were alive and in love with music in the late 1970s and 1980s, it’s kind of a must-see show. Titled Catch the Beat: The Roots of Punk and Hip Hop Photography, Beckman and Corio’s exhibition features scads of insanely great images–some familiar, many of which we had never before seen–of the icons of the era.

Here, for example, are Public Enemy, from the mid ’80s, posing in an unlikely rural setting. Corio, who was on hand at the Morrison Hotel Gallery and, even better, was nice enough to chat with us a bit, told us that the shot was actually taken in Hyde Park, and that he had to hold back the suits just trying to walk through the park on the way to the office, and who had no clue who Chuck D, Flava Flav, Terminator X and the S1Ws were, other than a crew of oddly dressed young men making them late for work. Corio’s portrait of Biz Markie (below) flashing his chains is a great photograph, too (we had the pleasure of shaking Markie’s hand back in the mid-’80s, and he couldn’t have been more pleasant… nor more HUGE), as is his silhouetted shot of Afrika Bambaataa, scratching in London. Mixed by Soul Kichen, Slow Hands

    Soul Kitchen (Switzerland)

It doesn’t take long to learn that Soul Kitchen knows a thing or two about good food and good music. Hailing from the rolling hills of Switzerland, this young man first established his DJ career from the infamous Basement parties he threw at the Università della Svizzera Italiana study hall. Architect student by day, Soul Kitchen by night was the name of his game. Now relocated in New York, Soul Kitchen’s fun-loving spirit and refined taste for all things funky, deep and soulful has already caught the attention of NY party-goers. For this afternoon we guarantee he’ll whip up a soulful dish of boogie shaking bliss…

Slow Hands (Wolf+Lamb / Double Standard | NYC)

Slow Hands first started making waves after joining the Wolf+Lamb family in 2009 and has quickly risen to the forefront of the US slo-mo disco scene with ear perking productions of space disco and disco-filtered house. But who’s labeling? The bottom line is, he’s captured a refreshing hybrid of future music that is yet-to-be-defined.

    DISCOVERY VINYL 7”
    STARMAGIC
    LIMITED 500 PRESSED

Discovery is an experimental pop group with disco, Latin, and prog rock influences that performs often in NYC. Always Discovery’s approach has been to keep it funky. Discovery has been said to straddle Tropicalia and post punk genres equally with comparisons ranging from Maximum Joy and Teena Marie to Hot Chip and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The group is not a rock band, per se–there is no guitar player in the group at present time. Focus on the bass grooves and drum rhythms for infectious , danceable fun. Vocalist Kathleen Cholewka sings with rock bravado and yet can emote in an intimate cabaret-like style. Lex Marsh’s synth tones and Bridget Fitzgerald’s string lines heighten the mood. Lyrics range from the abstract and dark, dreamy and suggestive to the provocative and direct. Along with originals, Discovery also lovingly chooses covers to perform including Laura Nyro’s Stoney End, Debbie Deb’s When I Hear Music, The Rolling Stones Under my Thumb, and Smokey Robinson’s Baby That’s Backatcha. Visit myspace.com/thisisdiscovery to hear live tracks.

Discovery’s first album of ten tracks called Pushy was released mid-year in 2010. It is available on cdbaby and iTunes. The group is now enlisting some of NYC’s music specialists to remix some of their tracks. The most recent is DJ Alfreako’s Moonlight Mix of Starmagic now available on 7″ vinyl and via Dancecampmusic.com.

Discovery started in vocalist Kathleen Cholewka’s dark Brooklyn basement in 2004 and had its first performance later that year. Over the years the group’s line up has included notable NYC players. Original and past members include guitarist Don Stahl, and keyboardist Lindsay Kaye. At one point Patrick Wood of Phenomenal Handclap Band was Drumming in Discovery. Marsh who joined early on to add additional bass, sax and keyboard sounds, is now writing much of Discovery’s music with Cholewka. David Smith, a much sought-after trombonist, joined and played on Discovery’s album pushy. David Scott of Guru’s Jazzmatazz continues to add his virtuosity to the mix via percussion and flute. And currently Julliard grad Fitzgerald’s viola playing brings unique and intense textures.  http://www.dancecampmusic.com/

Visiting saints make miraculous appearances and as always, there’s no tithe at the door and plenty of alms for the poor, so you can save while being saved.
