Made in the U.S.A. – Built by Greg Roberts
The Vittora is a fully horn-loaded, three-way, high-efficiency speaker system that delivers wide dynamic range, high output, and extremely low distortion.
The Vittora utilizes a 15″ woofer in a folded horn to produce solid, accurate, bass. Even at high output levels, the distortion from this horn is undetectable, and the result is a quickness and definition that you can only get with a horn design.
Cabinet construction is all Baltic Birch plywood, 1″ and 3/4″ thick, with no MDF used anywhere, and the bass cabinets are fully braced. The Vittora is built to be a solid performer for a lifetime of use.
The cabinets are built in two separate pieces with the top horn section separated from the bass bin, and sitting up on three gold-plated spikes. The bass bin is supported by three large wooden feet.
The Vittora uses a large wooden midrange horn with a tractrix flare. The horn has a 2″ throat and uses a BMS 4592ND-MID, large-format midrange compression driver with a 3-1/2″ voice coil. This combination of large, solidly built wooden horn with a large throat and huge midrange compression driver results in a midrange sound that is effortless and easy to listen to. There is no constriction of the sound through a tiny throat, there is no edginess, graininess, or honky sound that so many other horn designs suffer from. The Vittora midrange is smooth and articulate, dynamic and uncolored. The midrange is truly the heart of this loudspeaker, and the listener is rewarded with a musicality from this speaker that is very rare in this industry, at any price.[Read More]

“When the economy grows, it’s not because of a new government program or spending initiative. … It’s time to leave that era behind.”
— John A. Boehner, House speaker, May 2011
It might be hard selling that narrative line to the once broken beauty that is the Bronx.
As a teenager in the 1970s, I offered visiting friends tours of the apocalypse. We piled into an old Buick and drove north from Manhattan, which wasn’t in such great shape either, into the South Bronx. We rolled down ghost canyons of burnt-out buildings, saw mattresses and old sinks and tubs piled atop hills of rubble, and encountered smack dealers who cordoned off blocks for open-air markets. (We could not have been safer; they assumed we were white boys in search of a fix.)
It was macabre and infuriating, a core of urban America discarded and forgotten. Nothing, I assumed, could breathe life into this corpse.
I was spectacularly mistaken, a point driven home again on a recent tour in the company of city housing officials. Again I rolled across the Willis Avenue Bridge into the South Bronx, and what is there should (but almost certainly will not) give pause to those who argue that government lies at the source of our ills.
By Albert Freeman – Halcyon
While the global view on Detroit within the dance music community retains its emphasis on Techno, Detroit has been one of the most important historical cradles for development of all genres of black urban American music that have enjoyed deep interest and popularity in the city. The city’s influence on Blues, Jazz, Soul, Funk, Disco, House, Hip-Hop, Electro, and Techno stands unchallenged but the global focus on the most avant garde of the city’s electronic artists has always come at some cost to those working in areas that place more emphasis on the continuity of the city’s music culture. House has also been central to the city’s music and been present here almost since its original rise in Chicago, and the transition that led from Disco to House was played out here in nearly equal measure to the nearby Illinois metropolis. Thus figures like Norm Talley and his Beatdown Brotherscrew should be looked upon not as outliers, but as a truly central and essential part of a diverse musical culture. Since the mid 1980s, he and friends Mike “Agent X” Clark and Delano Smith have been pushing a brand of DJing and production that fluidly integrates the Disco, House, and Techno cultures of Motown and has been far too often ignored by the music press at large. In spite of respect earned from people like Eddie Fowlkes, for a long time their profile remained relatively low as the word on Detroit’s unique and diverse House sound was slow to leak out.[Read More]

Thugfucker (Life and Death | NYC)
Former international aid worker teams up with Icelandic security specialist and former top model to create an international DJ supergroup. Certainly not what you’d expect from a group called Thugfucker – but then Greg Oreck and Holmar Filipsson often do tend to defy expectations. One a New Yorker transplanted to Europe, the other an Icelander transplanted to New York. Both from a strong musical background with an almost obsessive dedication to the art of wild party instigation. Growing up on an Icelandic commune full of some of the country’s finest political thinkers, Holmar eschewed his past and all the heady philosophy of his childhood to move to New York and search out more physical and visceral methods of bringing happiness to the masses. Meanwhile Greg was in the midst of a successful (if short-lived) political career in America when he too became disillusioned with the duplicity and self serving interest of those around him. Disturbed by the void he saw in most people’s lives, it was in the dark depths of the New York underground club scene that he finally found his true calling. Unbeknownst to each other, Holmar and Greg then propelled themselves along similar paths, throwing parties, honing their musical & studio skills and searching out inspiration from a wide variety of musical sources. Then one late night, in a cloudy alcohol fueled discussion about the plight of the genetically Rhythm-Blind, Holmar and Greg recognized the depth of their shared passions. Thugfucker was born.

Scientific inspiration sometimes comes from unlikely sources. Two years ago, Gregory Berns, a neuroeconomist at Emory University in Atlanta, was on the couch with his kids watching American Idol. One of the contestants sang the melancholy hit song “Apologize” by the alternative rock band OneRepublic, and something clicked in Berns’s mind. [Read More]

On August 6,1988, the worst riot in 20-years erupted outside New York City’s Tompkins Square Park on the Lower East Side. On that night, nearly 500 police stormed into this popular neighborhood, assaulting hundreds, while trying to squelch the protest against a midnight park curfew. The obscure law allowing the closing of the park hadn’t been enforced by the city in decades.
Tompkins Square Park, considered by many as the heartbeat of the Lower East Side, is surrounded by a neighborhood populated by Latinos, punk rockers, artists, eastern European immigrants and a recent influx of wealthy professionals.[Read More]
Legendary producer Martin Rushent has died at the age of 63.
Perhaps best known for his work on The Human League‘s Dare, Rushent began his career in the 1970s, engineering records for the likes of T. Rex, Yes and Fleetwood Mac. His progress to the producer’s chair coincided with the birth of punk, and he was at the controls for key releases by Buzzcocks, XTC and The Stranglers.[Read More]

‘Viva Riva!’, a high-octane crime thriller set in the Congo during a fuel crisis, is the first feature film from the country in 25 years. And it’s a riveting, beautifully shot portrait of a country entangled in a violent web of corruption and desperation.
Riva, the charismatic title character played by Patsha Bay Mukuna, returns to his native Congo after a ten year absence with a stolen shipment of fuel and a cocky sense of newfound wealth. But bloodthirsty gangsters, who are bent on reclaiming their property, are hot on his trail. What unfolds is a compelling tale of a developing country entangled in corruption and sometimes brutal violence.
The film, which just won Best African Movie at this year’s MTV Movie Awards, manages to combine the similar pulsating energy of Brazilian director Fernando Meirelles’s ‘City of God’ with a realistic grasp of underworld pathology that recalls Hype Willams’ debut, ‘Belly’.
“My challenge was to push to the limit as far as possible, in terms of being true to the society,” said first-time director Djo Tunda wa Munga (above center, with actors). “Which means talking about the real issues, the prostitution, the sexuality and also the violence.” We chatted with Munga recently about the challenges and triumphs of making a film (which opens in theaters in New York, Los Angeles and Portland on June 10) set in his native country.[Read More]

Loleatta was born in Chicago in 1946 and, like most of her peers, began singing in gospel groups before striking out on a solo career through GRC subsidiary Aware. In 1976, she was signed to the Norman Harris-helmed Gold Mind, an offshoot of Salsoul Records, where she recorded all of her best work, usually working with Harris. Although she made a number of classic recordings it was through her live work that Loleatta excelled, often performing at the gay clubs of the era, like the Paradise Garage and Better Days. Her vocal were later sampled by Black Box for their controversial hit ‘Ride On Time’. Loleatta died on March 21st after a short period of ill health.
Tell me how you got signed to Salsoul?
OK, I was signed to GRC first, out of Atlanta Georgia, on Aware. The owner of the record company went to jail.[Read More]

Every disco generation has their hero, and UK’s DJ Harvey is one of today’s most revered musical icons from Honolulu to Sendai. A veteran of the scene for over twenty years, Harvey has taken the worldwide stage by storm from the get-go. Known for being the first to bring NY’s late hero Larry Levan to the UK, Harvey is considered one of the leading figures at the forefront of the country’s Disco revival movement.
Founder of the Sarcastic Disco parties in Hawaii and label boss of the former Black Cock Records edits imprint (serious collectors drop up to $300 on these babies), Harvey is one of today’s most sought-after producers and DJs. His name alone connotes a certain adventurism, interchangeable with words like eclectic, fearless, obscureand open-minded. Not only do these attributes shine through his music but they are what makes Harvey one of the most favored DJs to see play out. Full of energy and positive spirit, Harvey is known for his infectious vigor behind the decks – go hear him play and you’ll find nothing less than a grinning frenzy of head bobbing and body shaking manning the ones and twos. He is the wild child of today’s Disco movement, a genuinely fun-loving DJ with a true love for the craft, wholly dedicated to sharing his music far and wide through multiple collaborations, both musical and charitable. We could go on and on…
Come this weekend, DJ Harvey will be gracing the main stage at this year’s Movement Festival in Detroit – a huge honor indeed. Days ahead of his performance, we reached out to the man, the myth, and the legend and chatted about his band, spreading love in Japan and the Rwanda Ice Cream Project.[Read More]

Mixed by Pets for Less & Bruce Tantum
Pets for Less
Pets for Less is a new duo on the disco front, consisting of friendsAlex Fish and Mike Fisher. The two only joined forces in January and share a creative spark both in the studio and behind the decks, so we’re very excited to hear what these fresh talents have in store for us (they’ve also promised to give us a rinse of some of their own, unreleased productions). Both seasoned DJs and producers in their own right, the two share a rich palette of musical tastes inspired by a lengthy number of artists and labels. However, of late they nod towards the Hot Natured nu disco sound, noting it captures their “general love for all things funky and trouble-making.” As innocent and sweet as their moniker entails, prepare for some badass-style disco this time around…
Alex Fish (aka Holosound)
Holosound (aka Alex Fish) is one of New York’s best-kept secrets. Ever since he emerged on the scene in 2004 as a two-man production, later becoming a one-man powerhouse, Holosound’s reputation for quality and consistency has permeated many corners of the global dance-music community and caught the attention of discerning club-goers and musicians alike. Following the exceptional success of Holosound’s monthly headlining night, “Citric,” at The Vault in New York City—a night which ran unbroken for four years straight—Alex and his former production partner,Noah Becker, launched Citric Recordings in 2008. With appearances from Tokyo to Toronto, Helsinki to London, Phuket to Estonia and all over North America—Alex has been turning heads and earning the respect of his fans and peers the world over. His unique style and knack for energizing dance-floors has also helped land Holosound gigs in support of many of the world’s top DJs—including Luke Fair, Satoshi Tomiie, Josh Wink, SOS, Kaskade, Audiofly, Desyn Masiello and others.
Mike Fisher
A recent Brooklyn transplant hailing from Washington DC, Mike Fisher has been a mover and shaker in the scene since 2003. As an established DJ he has played alongside the likes of big name headliners like M.A.N.D.Y., Matt Tolfrey, Lee Foss, to name a few. As one of the founders of the DC-based promotion crew, Mnmllife, he is one of the forces behind our capital’s growing dance music scene. Currently, the team is transitioning their brand into “Life,” steering away from the minimal sounds of the past and moving towards House and Disco’s warmer territory. In addition to being an active figure in the city’s nightlife, he is also boasts an esteemed background in music production having worked with the award winning artist Deep Dish as their studio engineer for 2 years, where he assisted in various labels such as Yoshitoshi and SCI+TEC Digital Audio.
Bruce Tantum
Does the name sound familiar? It should. DJ, journalist and all-round music-enthusiast, Tantum has been a fixture within the city’s electronic music scene since the days when clubs Studio 54, Limelight and Centro-Fly were alive and pumping. Today he is the main club editor for Time Out NY and has probably interviewed more DJs than the number of kernels in a bag of rice.
He is an essential voice and reliable source for the music, artists and trends within this far-reaching electronic music culture, whether he is covering a new album, party or festival. On top of his talent for the written word he DJs too, gigging throughout the city from rooftops to radio shows and is also a frequent guest in the UK, regularly playing alongside the DJ History crew spearheaded by Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton. Although he doesn’t parade his DJ skills don’t underestimate hits modest profile – this guy has plenty of taste and plenty of talent.

Clockwork (Hot Creations / Life & Death Brooklyn)
Francesco Leali and Federico Maccherone aka Clockwork met at the age of 15 both growing up in the suburbs of Milan. Francesco’s music interests and qualifications range from twelve years studying percussion at the Milanese conservatory, to a degree in music marketing and artist promotion. Federico on the other hand started as a label founder, later deciding to follow his true passion moving to New York to start playing in underground clubs immediately making a name for himself. Their music is driven by anything varying from ’80s Disco music to chugging Techno. Their sound is mainly characterized by bouncy and decisive analog bass lines combined to rhythmic drum patterns, all mainly inspired by music from the ’60s ’70s and ’80s.

Anthony Parasole
Born and raised in Brooklyn, Anthony Parasole has had a lifelong love affair with electronic music. Listening to radio shows playing the early dance tracks from New York, Chicago, and Detroit that really perked up his ears. His earliest experiences at the New York clubs and Storm Raves really blew his mind wide open. Not content to just be another party kid, Anthony began scouring the record stores for all of his favorite tracks. From the late-80?s to the mid- 90?s, Parasole was also huge into hip-hop. His engulfment in this gritty New York street-music is an influence on his style to this day.
From 2003 to 2007, Anthony was a buyer at the Halcyon record store. Through Halcyon, a real pillar of the scene in NYC, Parasole made many contacts, and of course, multiplied the size of his record collection by carefully selecting all the best records from the store. He threw the “New Jack City” party at APT with his co-workers at Halcyon, bringing in The Martinez Brothers for the first NYC gig, Slam Mode, MkL, Adultnapper, Nick Chacona, Todd Sines, Brennan Green, and many more. This party really increased Anthony’s exposure in New York, and led to many gigs at bigger clubs, including opening slots for Derrick May, Cajmere, and Layo and Bushwacka. 2008 was a great year for Anthony. He launched the Deconstruct record label with his partner Levon Vincent. DEC-001 “Invisible Bitchslap” by Levon Vincent sold out in one week, and immediately put the label on the map, being charted by Marcel Dettmann, Shed, and Jan Krueger. Hardwax and other influential stores are clamoring for more! Parasole also founded the House-N-Home loft-party series with partner Bryan Kasenic. They’ve already thrown successful parties with Jus-Ed, Brothers’ Vibe, DJ Qu, Fred P, and Adultnapper, and will play host to Move D and other artists from the cutting edge of house and techno music in 2009. Anthony is currently working his own original productions due to come out later this year!
