  • SESSION 896: SLOW DISCO SATURDAYS 01.08.11

Mixed by Beg To Differ (aka My Cousin Roy and Nick Chacona), Matthew Moffe

My Cousin Roy (The Wurst Music Co.)
Roy Dank (aka My Cousin Roy) is the mind behind the “Wurst Edits,” imprint. The New York label, which launched in 2006 boasted radical reworkings of yesteryear’s clandestine disco by the likes of label head Roy Dank aka My Cousin Roy and his talented friends, including Runaway, who went on to produced acclaimed releases for DFA and Rekids; the multi-talented producer, DJ and illustrator Doug Lee aka Lee Douglas, Douglas Sound and one-half of TBD (with Justin Vandervolgen) and Stallions (with Lovefingers); and Eamon Harkin, part of the NYC party juggernaut that is Sunday Best and Mister Saturday Night. The edits received support from esteemed DJs as far as wide as 2ManyDJs, Carl Craig, Harvey, Erol Alkan, James Murphy, Simian Mobile Disco, and Tim Sweeney, amongst many others. In early 2009, Roy teamed up with designers Josh Clancy and Travis Stearns to take the label’s visual aeshetic to the proverbial next level. Come July of that year, the label evolved into The Wurst Music Co with the release of Brennan Green’s My First House, quite possibly the cult producer’s most dance floor savvy work to date. Wurst has gone from strength to strength since with releases from Neurotic Drum Band, Reade Truth, Great Weekend, and Ulysses. The Wurst Has Yet To Come…

    Nick Chacona (Hector Works)
Nick Chacona is one of New York’s disco-house mainstays and over the course of his 15-year career as a DJ and producer has become one of the city’s most respected underground talents within its vibrant dance music scene. In a DJ capacity, Nick is as versatile as you will find. He began spinning over 15 years ago, strictly playing reggae but shortly thereafter fell in love with House & Disco. Never one to let the crowd down, Nick’s sets are filled with energy, finesse, and diversity flowing from Nu Disco, House, Techno, Italo and classics—whatever is required in the moment. He has played across the US from NY to San Francisco, as well as Brazil, Germany, Spain, Poland, Romania, Belgium, Sweden, Serbia, Holland, and the UK. His production skills are just as dynamic as his style behind the decks and over the course of his career has spread his skills far and wide and garnered a lengthy discography under his belt. Over the years his productions have grown to encompass elements of sound from across the world of dance music, melding the arpeggiated sounds of Rimini, the trackiness of Chicago, minimalism of Berlin, and dubbed out vibes of Kingston, Jamaica sometimes in the same track. He began producing in 1999 under the Version Eternal moniker for NY label Homestyle Cooking. Since that time Nick has gone on to release tracks on renowned labels Mood Music, 2020 Vision, Ben Watt’s Buzzin Fly, Saw, Dogtown, Bearfunk, and the inaugural release for Prins Thomas’s Internasjonal.

    Matthew Moffre (Drrtyhaze)
Matthew Moffre, a former (and self-acclaimed) “Shelter head” has been a staple on the scene as a DJ for roughly 18 years. Best known as one-half of the Drrtyhaze duo, Moffre, alongside his production partner have been actively producing since 2006, currently boasting a lengthy discography of original productions and remixes. At the turn of the New Year the team has a slew of exciting new releases on respected international labels such as UK’s Redux and Under the Shade as well as Germany’s Tirk and Redux imprints. In addition to their avid music making the two are frequent guests at parties such as the legendary classic school house-based Play It Loud series. When running solo Moffre goes under the Love Tempo moniker, which he also dubs his monthly party now nearing its one-year mark. His tracks and mixes can be found onwww.beatsandwords.com.

  • SESSION 895: THE BANDWAGON 03.16.11

Mixed by Taimur Agha,Anthony Parasole(Deconstruct/halcyon) & Joey Anderson (Inmeg)

    Anthony Parasole
Born and raised in Brooklyn, Anthony Parasole has had a lifelong love affair with electronic music. Listening to radio shows playing the early dance tracks from New York, Chicago, and Detroit that really perked up his ears. His earliest experiences at the New York clubs and Storm Raves really blew his mind wide open. Not content to just be another party kid, Anthony began scouring the record stores for all of his favorite tracks. From the late-80?s to the mid- 90?s, Parasole was also huge into hip-hop. His engulfment in this gritty New York street-music is an influence on his style to this day.

From 2003 to 2007, Anthony was a buyer at the Halcyon record store. Through Halcyon, a real pillar of the scene in NYC, Parasole made many contacts, and of course, multiplied the size of his record collection by carefully selecting all the best records from the store. He threw the “New Jack City” party at APT with his co-workers at Halcyon, bringing in The Martinez Brothers for the first NYC gig, Slam Mode, MkL, Adultnapper, Nick Chacona, Todd Sines, Brennan Green, and many more. This party really increased Anthony’s exposure in New York, and led to many gigs at bigger clubs, including opening slots for Derrick May, Cajmere, and Layo and Bushwacka. 2008 was a great year for Anthony. He launched the Deconstruct record label with his partner Levon Vincent. DEC-001 “Invisible Bitchslap” by Levon Vincent sold out in one week, and immediately put the label on the map, being charted by Marcel Dettmann, Shed, and Jan Krueger. Hardwax and other influential stores are clamoring for more! Parasole also founded the House-N-Home loft-party series with partner Bryan Kasenic. They’ve already thrown successful parties with Jus-Ed, Brothers’ Vibe, DJ Qu, Fred P, and Adultnapper, and will play host to Move D and other artists from the cutting edge of house and techno music in 2009. Anthony is currently working his own original productions due to come out later this year!

    The Bandwagon
The Bandwagon is halcyon’s All New Old-Timey Record Review and Talent Show! • SESSION 891: BLESS UP 04.07.11

Mixed by Human, Rock-N-Ruin, Lifeline, Winter

    Rack-N-Ruin (Black Butter | UK)

Considered by iDJ magazine as “One of the most exciting producers working in the London bass scene…” Rack-N-Ruin is a formidable force in  underground dance music. Working at various tempos with a heady grip of established artists and remix producers, Rack-N-Ruin is a dj/producer on the move. Known for carving his way neatly through haunting electro-organs and dramatic synth-stabs, his production seems to demand ‘hands in the air’ moments at every turn, while his genre-crossing DJ sets call for all out dance floor warfare. With clean, super solid productions,  hard hitting breaks ranging in tempo from 100-140, serious sub-bass weight and the intertwined, unmistakable raw elements of Reggae and Dubstep that have permeated electronic music of late, Rack-N-Ruin comes correct. With a relentless release schedule, Rack-N-Ruin’s remix credits include Nas & Damien Marley, I Blame Coco, Aggro Santos, The Nextmen feat. Groove Armada & Ms. Dynamite, Zero 7, and The Freestylers. His recent releases have harnessed the support of BBC’s Annie Mac, Nick Grimshaw, Kissy Sell-Out, Toddla T, Dj Zinc, Fake Blood, Shy FX, Jack Beats, Boy 8-Bit, and many more. With future projects line up including collaborations with Island Records, Ministry Of Sound, Southern Fried Records,  Fat! Records, MC Navigator, Slarta John (Basement Jaxx) , new vocalist Jessie Ware, and many more established vocalists and artists, Rack-N-Ruin is on the fast track. Armed with an arsenal of exclusive dubs, Rack-N-Ruin is setting out on US and EU tours, hitting hard in the streets, the clubs and on air.

  • NEWS: TODAY IS 420 SMOKER’S DAY

By ELLEN TUMPOSKY – abc News

At 4:20 p.m. today—in whatever time zone they happen to be in—pot-smokers will be lighting up to celebrate an unofficial holiday whose origins are debated by stoners with time on their hands.

Does 420 refer to a police code for illegal marijuana use? Is it a veiled allusion to the number of chemicals in cannabis? Or maybe it’s teatime in Amsterdam, the global spiritual home of marijuana smokers. Don’t forget that April 20 is Hitler’s birthday, so that must have something to do with it.

And how do you spell this holiday anyway—420, 4-20, or 4/20? [Read More]

  • NEWS: VINYL GETS SECOND LIFE IN A BROOKLYN FACTORY

By KRISTOFER RÍOS from NY times

In an industrial and uninviting stretch of Brooklyn, near several strip clubs and a factory that makes electrical tubing, Thomas Bernich’s small plant recycles vinyl and preserves a fading piece of history. In fact, Mr. Bernich’s workplace in Sunset Park is one of the few of its kind in New York City and in the country.

Inside the one-story, red-brick factory on 42nd Street, boxes of discarded albums from used-record stores are piled high on wooden pallets, awaiting their end and a new beginning.

  • NEWS: A CD-ONLY MUSIC STORE

By MERIBAH KNIGHT from NY times

One of these days, Chris Miller is going to run out of space for compact discs at his CD-only music shop, Chicago Digital, in Oak Park. Last week he had to put a second shelf in the restroom. It extends from the top of the toilet’s water tank to the ceiling and accommodates classical composers from Liszt, Franz, through Mozart, W. A.

“I have pretty much packed out where I can go,” Mr. Miller said.

He said he believed that Chicago Digital, which opened in 1985, was the first compact-disc store in Illinois. The shop now holds around 40,000 discs, Mr. Miller estimates with a tape measure allotting three discs per inch. (His only vinyl is a box of LPs someone abandoned three years ago, and it still sits on the shop’s floor.)

  • SESSION 883: BLESS UP 03.24.11

Mixed by Lifeline, Shigeto, Nooka Jones

    Shigeto (Ghostly International | NYC)
Artists take on pseudonyms for a multitude of reasons, but in Zach Saginaw’s case, those reasons run deeper than most. Zach records under the name Shigeto. It’s his middle name; it’s also his grandfather’s name, a tribute to the Japanese branch of Zach’s family tree. Shigeto also means “to grow bigger”—appropriate, given Zach’s premature birth-weight of less than a pound. Today, Shigeto stands for Zach’s vividly beautiful electronic music. Beat- driven but given to richly textured sound design, rhythmically fractured but melodically sumptuous, Shigeto’s music is a bridge between the past and present, bringing the artist face to face with a creative legacy that spans decades. Zach was brought up on a steady diet of Michigan-bred music, as his father spoon-fed him old Motown and jazz records by the crateload. Zach picked up the drums at an early age, spending much of his childhood playing in the Detroit/Ann Arbor music scene. After nearly flunking out of high school—save for his music studies—Zach spent three years studying jazz at the New School in NYC and three more in London, where he began woodshedding, obsessed with learning electronic production. Soon enough, beats materialized, Zach moved to Brooklyn and took up the name Shigeto, and Zach’s peers began to take notice.Zach’s body of work has grown over the last few years to the tune of several EPs on Moodgadget as Shigeto and with A Setting Sun, a pair of EPs under the alias Frank Omura (another family-name reference), and remixes for Worst Friends, Praveen & Benoit, Tycho, Mux Mool, Charles Trees, A Setting Sun, Beautiful Bells, Shlohmo, and more. The Semi-Circle EP will be his first release with Ghostly International; the full-length Full Circle is on the horizon. Semi-Circle is a fiercely independent work of art, nominally indebted to instrumental hip-hop but, like Zach, straddling many worlds at once. Cool shades of ambient music, stuttering early IDM, dubstep sub-bass, and jazz melodicism color Shigeto’s palette, which he wields with a painterly attention to detail. As Ghostly International hits its 10th anniversary, Shigeto is one of the first of a wave of young artists who grew up influenced by the label’s early output. And again, names come into play. “Putting out this record on Ghostly isn’t just ‘getting signed,’ for me,” says Zach, “it’s becoming part of a family, an influence that I’ve respected forever. That’s Full Circle.” Let’s just say the feeling’s mutual.

Shigeto tracks are available for download in mp3 and wav format on halcyondigi.com

Praveen Sharma (Casette / Percussion Lab | NYC)
Praveen Sharma has been making music for most of his life, and has contributed releases to AI, Neo Ouija, and Expanding Records. He also runs Percussion Lab, a hub for underground electronic music and exclusive DJ sets, in addition to being an avid live performer and event organizer in New York City. Praveen released his debut Backed by Spirits on the now-defunct Neo Ouija imprint in early 2005. Not long after, Praveen returned from a   profound journey through his family’s native India with a minidisk full of field recordings and voices, forming the basis of Song Spun Simla, his second album released with Benoit Pioulard. His most recent work with Machinedrum under the alias Sepalcurehas garnered international acclaim and a solid string of releases thru the infamous Hotflush label headed byScuba. Their mix of Tribal Dub, House and Two-Step beats works equally well for both late nights in the club and rainy, introspective nights at home. Detroit Techno chords cut through wooden beats, neon synths and dubbed out atmospherics, leading the always looking for the next thing music press to coin the term “Love Step” to describe Sepalcure’s effect. www.percussionlab.com

    Margaret Dygas
Life as Margaret has experienced it has had more than it’s fair share of unusual twists and turns, she quips about life in a very positive light ‘Never a dull moment!’ With a childhood that began in Poland, at aged 11 she escaped to Germany with her family eventually moving to the States, initially to San Jose, California. In the late eighties the music she was surrounded by and adhered to was old school hip hop; there were house parties every weekend and lots of chillin’ in the backyard. Her discovery of house music started in New York in the early nineties when she moved to study fashion at the renowned Fashion Institute of Technology. Before long her college friends had introduced her to the whirlwind underground club scene; the flamboyant gay clubs where vogueing was all the rage, dressed up club kids, intimate basement techno nights, jungle gatherings and scores of insane house parties.

Captivated by the British dance scene, she moved to London in the summer of 99. Her first job was on the door of Home, her day job was as a make up artist and she began to play out at parties and warming up in clubs. Then three years ago she decided make this her full-time career. Her wide musical background has made her keen to experiment with new sounds and styles through out the years, now more on the electronic side of things where the choice is endless Margaret has found herself where she is most comfortable, from dub to techno and anything in between.

Margaret has been a regular feature on London’s electronic scene playing at clubs such as Fabric, The End, The Key and Herbal. She is a resident at label night Underline and has been supporting growing underground parties such as Multi Vitamins , Run, Minimallondon.com events, Stink at the T Bar as well as Technique in Leeds. Her music has been well-received in Berlin where she is fast becoming a friendly face at clubs like The Panorama Bar, The Arena, Club Der Visionare, Watergate, Kino International and House13. Last summer she was part of Cross Town Rebels mini tour around Europe playing at Electrosplash in Valencia, Watergate/Berlin and Space in Ibiza.

Over the years her DJ travels have taken her to countries such as Holland, France, Finland, Singapore, China and eastern Europe for growing club scene of Romania, Slovenia, Macedonia and Serbia’s vibrant Exit festival. Now making her first moves into production, her DJing style continues to develop and blossom. The electronic-tech vibe of her present sets incorporate the deep and minimal sounds she loves but retains the driving funk of her musical past.

According to Martin Sheridan, owner of the nearby Ear Inn bar, Hill suddenly collapsed. He reportedly died either at an East Side hospital or on his way to it.
