NEWS: THE TOMB OF CBGB’S

Posted by admin on November 25th, 2008

By Alan Feuer - NYTimes

“Despite what Neil Young says (“Hey, hey, my, my”), rock ’n’ roll not only dies — sometimes it is crated into boxes and shipped off to a mini-storage unit in the industrial wastes of Brooklyn. That, alas, is the precise and inglorious fate of CBGB, the legendary nightclub that for 33 years brought hardcore bands like Shrapnel and the Meat Puppets — not to mention chaos and cocaine — to the uplifted gormandizers of New York. Like all good things, the famous club (which closed its doors for good in October 2006) came to an end with a savage finality: the bar stashed in a trailer in Connecticut, the awning pawned off on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and much of the rest of it left to molder here, in a dingy 3,000-square-foot Moishe’s moving company storage space in Williamsburg, a stage dive from the Navy Yard.” [Read More]

REVIEW: WEIRD NYC NIGHTLIFE

Posted by admin on November 24th, 2008

By Susan Dominus - NYTimes

“It sometimes feels as if the autumn of 2008 will forever be known as the season when New York stopped — stopped bursting at the seams, stopped spilling money, stopped building up, stopped feeling invincible. Although the crowds still swirl, there’s suddenly the hint of negative space all over town: the shoppers who aren’t in the stores, the diners who aren’t packing the restaurants, the business meetings that aren’t happening, the colleagues who are no longer showing up for work. That’s why it’s a little encouraging that every Friday afternoon, right around the time the Dow closes for the day, an e-mail message from a former journalist turned artist named Jeff Stark still arrives in the in-boxes of his fans around the city. The subject heading is always the same — “Nonsense NYC,” followed by some dates. What the content of the e-mail message offers is a listing of events around town. But as a public good, Mr. Stark’s message, which is free for anyone who subscribes on his Web site, www.nonsensenyc.com, really provides two services: information for those looking for an unusual weekend excursion, and a voyeuristic glimpse of the city’s undaunted exuberance for those who aren’t.” [Read More]

REVIEW: BK GENTRIFICATION PLAY

Posted by admin on November 24th, 2008

By Ben Brantley - NYTimes

“Marion is, by her description, “a big black woman,” and hardly a retiring type. But when she walks into the new French café in her neighborhood — a place dominated by thin, pale, chic people — nobody sees her. It’s not that she’s being ignored, she says; it’s that “I don’t exist.” In Williamsburg, Brooklyn, her longtime neighborhood, she has become an invisible woman.” [Read More]

NEWS: CLUB REHAB FOR SALE

Former Save the Robots Space Is for Sale

By Daniel Maurer - NYMag

“According to a Picken Real Estate listing, the bi-level bar and music venue currently known as Rehab (and before that, Midway and Scenic) can be yours for $350,000. The 3,200-square-foot space’s eight-year lease is $8,195 per month. Curiously, the listing identifies the venue only as “former nightclub icon, Save the Robots,” which is funny since Robots, besides being the most mythologized club aside from Area, was of course a quasi-infamous after-hours (though it was as Guernica that the spot achieved true notoriety after a stabbing). Manhattan Offender recently recalled being asked for coke there — twice by the same person. Anyone care to rekindle the magic?”
