“Three weeks ago a pair of former burlesque performers at the Box, a downtown theater/cabaret/hot spot, posted photographs on their page at MySpace.com of what they said was its filthy dressing room. The women added a litany of explicit charges about the personal habits and business practices of one of the owners, Simon Hammerstein. “The inhumane treatment of the artists and employees at the Box is appalling,” began the posting by the pair, who call themselves the Porcelain TwinZ.

A week later, on Sept. 15, a committee of Community Board 3, which covers the Lower East Side, voted to deny recommending the renewal of the Box’s liquor license because of complaints about noise.

It seemed that the club, which when it opened less than two years ago was labeled the savior of hip Manhattan nightlife, might be too controversial for its own good, and could even be in peril.” [Read More]
