The new Galapagos in Dumbo had a private party last night, showing off the new space. We snuck in for a quick look around and found it to be…interesting. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to take any pictures on the grounds that we weren’t supposed to be there but we can say that it doesn’t seem to maximize the square footage and isn’t very conducive to dancing or even mingling. The reflecting pool concept was carried over from the Williamsburg space but this time its a bit more integrated with the rest of the venue. Circular platforms (lily pads?) hover over the water and provide space for seating while a mezzanine wraps around the perimeter of the building and provides a birds eye view of the action below. Acoustically it was hard to tell how things will turn out since it is still a work in progress however, last night things were pretty echoey and reverberant. Despite all this, it is a unique design in a great location that will probably make a good performance and art space – just as they planned.
