BAMcafé Live

Cutlery, Taylor McFerrin, Bear In Wolf Fur, ellul
Fri, June 29 at 9pm

Free!
The Afro-Punk music series kicks off with two nights in BAMcafé that feature the next generation of singers, songwriters, and multi-instrumentalists with something to say. Night one highlights the work of four distinct performers including ellul, a San Francisco-based band whose vocal harmonies are sweetly evocative yet somehow unsettling. Cutlery focuses on electronically-enhanced shoegazing, while Bear In Wolf Fur pairs a DIY approach to music-making with a strong appreciation for raw noise. Spinning between sets, Taylor McFerrin builds songs from scratch with synths, samples, vocals, and beatboxing.

Mighty Fine, Swivel, Tiombe Lockhart
Sat, June 30 at 9pm

Free!
Night two of Afro-Punk at BAMcafé features another triple header that isn’t afraid to get loud and funky. Bringing New Orleans heat to New York City cool, Mighty Fine riles things up with their “sweaty, garage soul,” while Swivel’s indie rock channels Radiohead at its electro-poppiest and gives R&B harmonies the attention they deserve. Meanwhile, neo-soul chanteuse Tiombe Lockhart’s flamboyant live performances are all about giving the audience a good time with songs that cruise from ironic to whimsical to poetic.

The SavenetRadio coalition

The future of Internet radio is in immediate danger. Royalty rates for webcasters have been drastically increased by a recent ruling and are due to go into effect on July 15 (retroactive to Jan 1, 2006!). Webcasters across the country participated in a national Day of Silence this week to increase awareness about this looming threat and gather support for the SaveNetRadio collation and our campaign to preserve music diversity on-line.
